I've been contemplating on which midi keyboard to get for quite a while now, cant seem to decide what to go for. couple of days ago i went to have a look in a local store and had a go at an XL 49 mkII connected to live 8, also tried out a couple of axiom models but tbh there's no comparison.
does Anyone actualy own an XL49? what's your feedback? is it worth it for the money?

notice that in the video m-audio axiom has a broken key !
i am a novation fan, had alot of truble with m-audio stuff. had two soundcards from m-audio and both of them didnt work properly, and had an axiom 25 which broke down on me after one day (from 26 keys only a few were working).

i own a novation 25 SL MK II, and i recommend it.
it comes with the automap software (make sure to
update it to the pro version, the code comes with
the product).you can save any plugin routings
for any vst wich is loaded automatically when opening a vst
but it needs time and work to understand how it works.

Novation has Automap which totally kicks ass, and afaik no one else managed to implement it as good as them.
If you have no need for Automap, check out the Roland/Cakewalk series. I have the A-300 and I love it.

Novation, hands down. I have an SL II and with Ableton, it's great.
One cool thing you can do with automap is assign the buttons to keyboard keys, including hotkeys which ableton uses for different commands. The arrow keys, cut/copy/paste/duplicate, etc. can all be mapped to the SL II. Including anything you assign with Ableton's Key mapping feature.
On top of that, with Automap you can have 16 channels worth of 128 CC messages, meaning you can use Ableton to map them to anything in the software, including rack macro knobs. Additionally, this allows you to record those same CC messages into Ableton MIDI clips in session.
That's all in addition to Automap's standard feature of allowing you to customize each plugin with Automapped knobs, which can be recalled with the push of a button or whenever you open the plugin UI.
Feel free to ask about any questions regarding these possibilities. For example, one of my SL II buttons (on one of my mapping presets) is set so when I press it, it will:
1. Rename the clip selected to a blank name, duplicate it into the next slot, and trigger it to play... a total of 5 key commands assigned to a single button. (If I wanted to, I could set it to make 4 dupes instead of just one, and trigger the bottom-most dupe in the session column group.)
In my live set template, I have a separate MIDI channel for processing incoming MIDI data from the controller and route it to whichever instrument track I have armed. This track has note filters, randomizers, arpeggiators, etc. on it and all of those knobs are routed to one of the many custom preset mappings I have for my Ableton functions and vsti/fx presets.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback, in fact i went to the store and i got it ...... unfortunately right after i got it i had to go strait to work for a night shift, cant wait to finish to go unbox it!! such a torture!!! :S
One thing i couldnt help noticing while i was at the store is the novation ultranova, i have to say i was tempted to get them both at one go, but i thought il do some find outs on the synth myself before i commit. I gave it a try and the sound quality and the way new patches are created and edited is spot on!, shame its not multitimbral, but i realy liked it none the less, and for 480 euro......anyone tried it out for himself?

I love everything about novation, except their knobs. They suck.
Our novation nova's knobs are glitchy, the cutoff jumps randomly if touched. My nocturns knobs decided to start sending random values if touched after only a couple of travels. If novation had a more solid and durability healthy approach I would use them all the way when coming to midi controllers.

thats a shame cause when you look at both the sl and the nova they look quite solid...guess will have to take it a bit easy on them

u can simply cancel the touch sensitivity assigned to all the knobs on the sl mkii, instead of being activated when touched, you can dissolve touch sensitvity and change the parameters to rotary, so they will only send signals when they are moved.
