I dont have it, but I know it a bit...and I wonder how you want to make leads with it.
I imagine this a bit difficult without keys and only pads, but I dunno how you plan to do that.

you can map your launchpad so that every button you press it plays it in a scale
thats how i have had setup mine awesome fun I suck at playing keyboard but rocking on the launchpad isjust pure fun you cant hit a wrong note and you are in sync with the rest of the track depending on how you set up ableton (1/16, 1/8 etc...)

ok psylocybian, are you using the standard stepsequencer? if so this might be interesting for you.
i played a bit around with the max for live midi plugin; hatchet melodic stepsequencer, and its a big step up from the stepsequencer that comes standard with the max plugins.
sonic faction gives it when you buy their their synth, the hatchet (20 euro or so). dont know this synth very well, not so impressed at the first look and try. but the stepseq is great.
it has a slide -wroem wroem-. you can save the created midi patches, and the steplength goes up to 64 per go.
