i'd say get procesor that is the top end quality , all the new core duo should be.
get gig of ram , i never find myself use more then that.
reccomend : go small . always hastle to cary big fat lappy , i have 14" 2 kg and its pritty much fine.
beside that , good mobile soundcard is a must.

Sony Vaio or Dell xps/inspiron
1 - processor: intel duo core 2 (2GHZ or more)
2 - ram : 2 GB at 667 mhz
3 - hd: please, only 7200 rpm..no 5400rpm...
4 - Be carefull if it comes with Vista windows, cause it might bring you some headache once drivers are too delayed for most of softwares and hardwares. I'd rather use xp for now...
5 - Don t even try Toshiba, acer, etc..

Thanks for the tips so far
The prob is i have not that much money to buy a ultra high end notebook. I am student and have only a job where i get a little money, beside this i still have to pay for car and other stuff.
Do u think a Dual Core (not 2) will do the job too?
I read that the difference between the mobile chips Dual Core and Dual Core 2 are not 'that' huge.

you should chack also the mac books, they are very good priced and they run windos perfectly so u can enjoy the 2 worlds
the only down side thats they dont have pci slot if u use echo indigo sound card as many otheres if u use any other usb/firewire card ull be happy with it
core 2 due 2.0
1024ram
120gb sata hd
13.3 screen with built in cam and mic
same spec in a vaio will be double the price.
good luck

i agree about acer but why not toshiba?
mine works and performs great!
being playing with it live and djsets and never had any issue whatsoever the past 1 year !
also in home use(internet etc.) agian it works super!
i would not say the same for sony they are super overpiced machines!
dunno about dell tho never had one!

from what i can gather the difference between dual core and non-dual core will be much bigger than the difference between core 2 duo and core duo.
in other words the performance gap between dual core and non-dual core is much more noticeable than the performance gap between first-generation and second-generation dual core processors.
the consensus when buying a laptop seems to be 'get the very best processor you can afford'

hi, i tell you my experience, i bought a macbook pro c2d 2,33, is a beast!!! I installed with bootcamp win xp prof then i installed motu drivers (at the beginning i had some problems, don't know why) then i installed updates and firewire hotfix and dual core hotfix and at the moment is something incredible! I installed cubase sx and works great with motu on window, and you can use every firewire present on macbook, 400 or 800 (is the same for motu), the alimentation is ok, everything works fine! I suggest to you to buy a macbook so you can make music in windows xp and cubase (so you can use every software you want) and if you want to make a live just switch to osx and you are free of any crash (is not 100% true...), think about it! |

Why not 5400 rpm? most of laptops are SATA anyway, so the buffer is high.
And actually, 99% OF LAPTOP USERS HAVE 5400 RPM.
Again, 7200 is better but 5400 rpm SATA should be fine as long as you got plenty of ram and a good cpu.

i'm interesting to by a vaio with plenty of ram
and good cpu but the hard disk is 5400 rpm sata.i olso heard that i must look for 7200 rpm hard drive and i dont know if vaio's laptops have that.my second choice is to look for a macbook but i dont know what to buy. question:if i finally go for a macbook witch is the best for music production ,model,etc..

Well, I am actually recieving today from Fedex mine I bought last week.
Alienware gives you an option to configure online your hardware and OS, so It is a choice.
Mine is 5400 rpm, 2 gig of ram, Windows Media edition, Turion dual core.
Let me try it and let you know how 5400 rpm worked for me.
Again, it is SATA so its not like old ide drives 5400.

hey guys, i use cubase sx on a macbook pro with 120gb 5400 and rocks! its never tired to play everything i like, i think the most important thing is gHz and ram than you can think about hard disk! If you take a macbook (no pro) you can change hard disk in one minute:
look-->> http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/MacBook/Hard-Drive-Page-1-Battery
so you can buy in the future an 7200 HD

Well if you can buy it 7200 rpm go for it....if you can t, go for 5400. Only top macs have 7200 rpm option, while Dell has up to 100Gb.
Mac is also a nice option, but the best option about cost/benefit is Dell, no doubt. I did an intense research at USA market. Vaio is more expansive...
You can buy powerfull Dell inspiron for real amazing values...maybe you d find your budget is higher than you thought...
I even bought it refurbished directly from Dell s website, and I can tell you its a real fast machine:
Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 2GHz
2 GB ram at 667
100GB 7200 rpm HD
15" monitor
Price: U$1100,00
