If you're absolutely, 100% positive you want to use Logic, then get a macbook. Otherwise it's an overkill for music production. Some people produce on computers with 1.83gHz processors and 2gb ram just fine. Anything with more than that will be fine. Obviously if you want a good computer overall you can get something better, but it's not necessary on the production side of things.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Forget a macbook, get a pc laptop Cheaper, easier to repair, definitely comparable to a mac and 90% of all psytrance producers use them for these reasons (and just about everything else done on computers, too). You can get one that will work for you on the cheap, especially now, since a new processor model and Windows 7 just came out, meaning prices are falling.

A $600 max cost laptop will give you the basics of what you need.

Then of course you need a sound card. If you're a beginner, get a beginner sound card as you're just learning anyway. A lot of people use the M-Audio Fast Track Pro although personally I think this sound card is very unreliable and fragile. If your gear doesn't move around a lot or leave your home much than it should do until you get the know-how and cash for something better.

Next you need a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). For PC, Cubase is the general standard, followed closely by Fruity Loops. Ableton Live seems to be on the rise nowadays and gives you the benefit of one DAW for both production and live performance (which if you are starting from complete scratch will be a few years down the road at least if you are making music every day.) Of course, you can pirate all the DAWs for free at your own risk, but if you have the money, of course it's recommended to buy it. Plan on spending $800, approximately. (A hidden benefit of buying your DAW is you can use the license you get to live in a foreign country on an artist visa! ) Download and try out all the DAW demo versions to see which one seems to fit you best.

Then, of course, you need synths. Lots of synths. There are plenty of freeware softsynths out there, and of course at-your-risk pirating. Or buying, of course, haha. Hardcore oldschoolers will tell you that hardware is the way to go here, which means money, and nothing beats a hands-on interface, not to mention sound quality, so they definitely have a point. But quite a few people making music today use software synths entirely. A lot of people today use a Virus TI because it's basically psytrance-in-a-box plus a capable external sound card. However your synth choices are grander and more diverse than ever so shop around.

If you go the softsynth route, a decent MIDI controller is proportionately a must-have. The very basics cost you $100 or less but there are also some very very decent ones for $400 or less. Of course if it is your first controller, you'll probably want a keyboard so you can play notes without drawing them in all the time.

After that, you'll really love a receiver/amplifier and monitors (or powered monitors) so you can actually hear what you're doing. Of course, quality costs money. Headphones are also a nice accessory.

And last but not least, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE, and that includes doing your homework... reading articles, talking to people, asking questions. SAVE everything you're doing. These forums alone have loads of good threads for getting tips and advice and a rather healthy peer support community.

It's not an easy or cheap hobby to get into. It costs time and money. It won't get you laid (at least at first, lol). But I'm sure many people on this site alone can testify to how rewarding it is in the long run. Good fortune to you. Start small, be patient, get one piece at a time, and if you're committed, dedicated, or just plain rich, you'll have what you need when you need it according to your learning curve. Be open to criticism, yet trust in your judgment.

And about learning...

... the learning never stops, that is, until you start thinking you know it all, and then the stopping is always premature! Even those who have been doing this for years are still learning, and don't forget to view your production for what it really is... an art. look at it like painting a painting, except where you perceive a painting in the dimension of space, music is perceived in the dimension of time. There are tons of techniques and no clear-cut right or wrong. Creativity is a path, not a goal. Remember that, and music production will be much more enjoyable. If you set a goal for yourself you will never reach it, for when you think you do, all you end up seeing is more horizon, not only in front of you, but ALL AROUND you. Unless you become blinded by ego or self-doubt, all you will need to do is pick a direction and follow it. Develop your own style! The gear, theory, and technology is more plentiful than ever before, and these are all tools you can use to find your own way.

And don't be ashamed to ask questions! Even stupid questions! (Of course, Google is your best friend also. )

mine is old, i think is t200 and something dual core, 1gb ram, and i run fl with a lot of plugins open just fine, no need to bounce everytime.

I use a clean windows xp config.           ``We shall not cease from exploration - And the end of all our exploring - Will be to arrive where we started - And know the place for the first time.``
