Question about rigs and generators.
Looking to run a 5kw rig off a generator.
Does that mean i will need a 5kw generator or can i get away with less?
I read somewhere else that a diesl 2.6 kw generator should be able to run a 5-6 kw rig. But that doesnt seem to make sense to me... Does that mean it will only run it a 2.6 kw?
Any one know about this stuff?

Probably someone on the forum knows, but why don't you just ask your local music equipment retailer? They can usually put you in touch with ppl that organize gigs and stuff.... |

I'm in the same situation! Having a party in 2 weeks and require a generator.
From my old days installing car stereos I remember that there is peak power (often when buying cheap speakers they will be listed as 1000Watt PEAK PERFORMANCE!) which is totally useless measurement of power equal to how much power you can put into the speaker briefly before it explodes. The root mean squared or RMS power is much lower, and is the best indication for how much power is required over a prolonged 'musical' time period.
So depending on the way the rig is labelled as 5000w (peak or RMS) you could get away with 2.6kw for a peak power rating easily. If the rig is 5000W RMS, you'll need at least a 5000w generator. Assuming you want it to run at maximum volume.
edit: post 303, yahoo! |

I'm just outside London in the countryside. A good buddy of mine is leaving the country to go travelling for a year so I'm organising a big Marquee and a large number of people to come dance about.
My friend has a large field at the back of his house with fantastic views which is perfect.
I'm not quite sure of the laws, but we're on private land in the middle of nowhere so I don't see what the police can do. I've been to at least 10 free parties that have been shut down by police though (helicopters and dogs!). I hate the British 'rave act'. Basic human right - dancing denied.
Need to hire toilets, that's the most expensive thing

What it comes down to is the amplifiers, they are what are drawing the power from the generator.
If you're happy with your amps powering your speakers, you've used them before and not managed to blow the rig, then add up all the output wattage from the amplifiers and that'll give you a figure required to run your rig at maximum volume. |
