Oki,..
New Laptop; Dell Latitude E 5400
(7200 rpm disk, 4 gb ram, c2d, XP pro)
Dont have external audio device yet so trying out with Asio4all 2.9,.. First i had no sound at all, but when i checked the "Use hardware buffer" i got sound (In Fl studio 8)
But i get these small cracks or clicks every 4-5 sec, even tough processor is low (10- 30%) not like the stutter or real glitches im used to on my desktop DAW when pushed to hard. Strange thing is that it doesent seem to mather if latency is set low or high,.. or if processor is low or high load. (Also its quite subtle clicks, hard to hear when the music playin more than an intro or softer passages)
Been running latency checker tool, great tool if you didnt already know,... http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml And always in the green. (About 30 nanosec and small spikes up to 150-200 nanosec) And turning of devices in devicemanager doesnt seem to help.
Could it just be the Asio4all driver and no way to know if i have any problems before i run a proper soundcard and driver?
Very thankful for any help!

Sorry if it's the same thing as latency (i dont know) but have you tried turning the buffer speed up? Worked for me.

yes,.. still same small clicks,.. almost like, wouldnt say vinyl, couse its not att all crackling or buzzing, just the clicks from a vinyl noise if u can imagine... and its more like every 1-3 sec than 4-5 i wrote in last post.
Its really buggin me couse i dont get these sounds from directsound driver so nothing is wrong with hardware or cables. Also the fact that this doesent seem to bee latency related couse its the same if i run latency at 2ms or on maximum. (get other "normal" dropouts or gliches when latency to low an cpu to high) Neither is cpu load effecting these clicks.
Sould also mention i tried disabling loads of things like wireless, dvd, battery e.t.c.. services,. the usual xp tweaks.
Beats me.. (at the moment ;-))

Sorry Elad,.. what do you mean? CanŽt find anything like that. Did change latency tough. And discovered something really wierd. I wrote in last post that latency settings didt effect the clicks at all but actually it does, the clicks get WORSE when raising from 2 ms to 22 ms!?! (The clicks add up to some kind of crackling sounD) This is really something i havent ever heard of. Could this possibly have something to do with the fact that i dont get any sound if i dont check the "use hardware buffer" option in Asio4all?

I know exactly what you're talking about with the clicky sound, but it has only happened to me with high cpu loads, so I'm not sure.

Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

options > audio settings > check use mixer as playback position.
it can make it worse too. worth trying.
latency ?? go with higher numbers for better preformance. unless u make recordings.
dunno.. hope it help

of course,.. i know. But these clicks are pretty uneffected by latency setting, they even get worse paradoxicaly by setting higher numbers. (get normal latency stutter when having to low setting and high cpu, as anyone would, but these clicks are something separate from that)

IŽll probebly have to try external souncard to know if its just a problem with asio4all.. But do mean, background from motherboard?
And have anyone ever hear of clicks that are uneffected or even get worse !?! when latency setting is increased? |

Could it be that your CPU is dealing with too much stuff other than the sequencer? Windows updating itself, etc..

probably not,.. scince cpu load is low. And i have tweaked the normal xp for audio tweaks. And no programs automaticly starting on boot. But i really appreciate your help. Tanks |

Solved!
Found this setting in BIOS named CPU XD Support. It has something to do with blocking of programs using buffer override. Paradoxicaly, as i wrote before, i could only use buffer override option in asio4all, but unchecking this option i could now use asio4all in "normal" mode.
Get good underrun free performance at 6 ms latency. But i tink it could be better when i find out about whats causing the small peaks i see in this app i mentioned.
http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml
Someone told me to use this one http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/DevTools/tools/RATT.mspx to find out in xp whats causing latency spikes in latency checker. But havent figured out how to interpret results, so if anyone have any suggestions for things like that, it would be great.
And thankyou everyone who tried to help!! |

I cant believe this. Had a restart. No sound! so i had to go back to "use hardware buffer" settings and the small but irritating clicks,.. so guess iŽll hurry to try some usb or firewire audiointerface,.. |
