you can normalise your sample to any db you want. i use wavelb or soundforge. If you normalise to - 2db you could ad eq, or eq first and normalise second.
Ive heard normalising can lose you a bit of quality.
Remeber if your working with 24bit the signal to noise issure is less important and you can have your samples at -12 db no problem. |

well intersting subject.
i ALWAYS normalize my samples , and they just become more louder or alive if u want .and i never had problems with eq..
so??!!!what´s the big deal
normalize makes the sample loose quality?
mmmmmmm............??!!!!i had my doubt´s....
it think that´ts it´s for the other way around ...... |

i believe people say you loose quality because it increases the noise, but it should be the same thing as put the gain up (but with a peak detection).
if you normalize and then decrease the channel level, it's like don't normalize and put the channel volume up to get same level.

well its definately important your samples are loud enough, but its always best to try and get the samples to be loud enough from the output of the soundsource rather than make them louder afterwards.

It makes the sound louder but doesn't it take away from the quality? |

no, it doesnt. It has to do with having a good gain structure.
in my head it makes sense to have the sample normalized and then mix/apply FX, etc.
If i don't normalize most times i'll have to boost the volume somewhere else and that's mostly the same.
fact: when you normalizes or boost the volume you also amplify noise, but most of my samples arent recordings but true synth sounds at high quality so the noise is minimal. dithering problems happen also because i'm working in the digital domain, but that is the same for volume boost/cut and normalization.
having all samples normalized i know the peaks are at 0db or near or whatever the max is for FL (it might be -3db, whatever) and makes easier to analise for further eq/compress, etc

i use to normalize also.but not everything. for exemple when i have a hihat sample not so loud as the other track elements.i havent noticed any problem then...
but tsabeat is right,if it is overused it may cause distortion.
i think it is useful depending on the quality of the sample

Ok guys ,
In conclusion , it's better to work the EQ then
and take a best quality of samples .
No midi normalize export , just more level and EQ .
thanks for the advice

er dude .....
normalise and eq do completely different things. I wouldnt reach any conclusions just yet......
the difference between normalise and volume is that normalise will raise the entire level of the track/selection to precisely the normalise value you set. Its a more controllable volume control if you like.
