I've talked with a person (a hippy that moved from London to New-Zealand) that said that he and his friends used to shoot heroin once a week, as a recreational drug, and when they reached the age of 40 or something they decided they outgrew it and stopped. Just as easy as that.
Doing heroin once won't make you become a junky if you just do it to experiment, unless you're susceptible to addiction. And I'm sure that those guys knew what they were getting into.
