when i had my old virus it gave me a lot of creativity because you actually feel you touch the sound, i think its diffrent from the mouse or a midi controller knob though in the end its all the same. when i will have a little more money to spare i belive ill get a used virus b/c, but only because i like it and like the specific virus options and sound , you can defintly make music without hardware .
from what i heard from the nord i remember very clear sound which i really liked. the disco dsp is really good and i use it but never got the chance to a\b between them (i bet the real nords 2+ will take it big time) .
bekitzoor (in short? ) if you start to build a small studio, put the money on the computer and monitoring, after that you can start buying knobs...

I have a Nord Lead 2 for about 4 months now, and I have never really used it.
The midi ports I have not even connected to my PC.
Just played a bit with it.
So far I find Vst's easier to make my sounds with!

Thats a really good advice on the monitoring.
It's not very fun to spent money on good monitors but its SO important.

so why you bought it? didnt you know its easier with vst before you bought it?
i think you should leave for a moment the easier way and try to conect the midi cables, you will be suprised...

I'm to damn lazy to scroll thru the menus and setting up all channels in my sequencer.

Isn't there any editor available for the Nord?

easier with vst? thats a bunch of #$%$ (pardon my french there).
just the feel of real knobs at the edge of your fingers makes all the difference. not to mention the sound.
i find it much easier and quicker to use the nord.
i agree it maybe harder to automate and stuff like that because you cant actually see the knobs move. but i think the nord 3 has those lights around the knobs to solve that. so you can actually see whats going on. (not sure about that cause i have a NL2).
and assaf... in a comparison the NL does take it big time.... with the exact same preset it blows the discovery away. i guess they just used better algorithms at clavia.

i think this is perhaps a laziness issue i've had my nord lead 2 rack for about 5 months now, and i love it. sure, it can't produce the same sounds as some vsts, but if you compare one vst to another, can they make the same sounds? not always - different synths, whether hardware or software, are good at making certain sounds.

i have found that you really need to know how to do synthesis to get good sounds out of the nord - i'm still learning, but each time i tweak the knobs i learn more. keep at it mate, the nord produces some amazing sounds! it has really nice filters.

the discovery is good and has features that the nord doesn't (ie. fx), but some of its sounds don't compare to the actual nord.

there's a good youtube video that focuses on comparing the discovery to the nord lead, check it out here:

i don't agree here spending money on monitors is great fun! i got a pair of mackie hr824s quite a while back now, and they made my music making life so much better. it's much more of a pleasure to sit in front of them and make music than it is with speakers that aren't so good. good monitors are very worth it and make the experience much more fun, as well as more sonically accurate!

The biggest issue for me regarding Nord Lead 2 vs. Discovery DSP is the unison button wich isn´t in the Discovery. I use that all the time with my Nord. The chorus effect in disco dsp isn´t even close! But it is a great sounding vst nevertheless

Yup. I find that laziness is a big issue and many times part of the reason (if not the only reason) for people not liking hardware.
There are some good examples in this thread. Sunrunners is pretty good. You say you havnt really used it and youve not even tried to connected to your sequencer and yet you say that you fint vst's easier to make sounds with!

synth1 is very much like a nord lead, and it has a unison button as well

perhaps you could donate it to someone who would use it more? i selflessly volunteer to take this burdensome synth away from you and give it a good home

like assaf, i think the attraction of a hardware synth for me is the hands-on, instant nature of sound creation. rather than clicking endless menus, typing in parameters, using scroll wheels and right clicks to adjust things, being able to just grab the knobs and tweak away is to me far more musical, intuitive and creatively stimulating.

as for nord vs. virus - i'm saving for a synth one day soon and i'm leaning towards a virus simply because it seems to offer more: more filter types, more waveforms, more routing and modulation possibilities...

if what u want is hands on control, nothing beats the novation remote sl automap! and not only with this synth , u can use it with almost any other synth available. this doesnt have to turn into another boring hardware versus software pointless and boring discussion. there is no better just different, use what suits u best.
And the so called "analog hardware" u claim , like the nord and the virus arent real analog equipment, they are software as well inside the pretty box. So the "sound quality" argument is rather thin. I bet u guys could not point out tracks made with nord from tracks with discovery...
if i had 2 choose between a nord and a novation remote sl with loads of quality vst synths (like discovery or korg legacy) i would defenitely go for the remote (and i have).
happy tweaking day!           www.soundcloud.com/elektroakustica/sets/downtempo/

There has been nord vs discovery threads before with mp3 comparisions. Pretty clear difference.
You can even hear it in the Gearwire video even though the sounds quality is crap.
