Here you can find a comparison I made between Nord2x and Discovery 2.0
The text is in Russian but you don’t need to read just listen to the .mp3 files.
First goes how the Nord sounds, then the VST. Patches on synths are identical and they got the same midi data.

All files from the first post of the thread. Each contains first the sound from the hardware NL, then after a second of silence goes the same sound but from the Discovery VST. |

Dico Dsp's Fm filter doesn't scream like a nord lead, and the chorus doesn't even come close to the Nord
lead's unison. Other than this, it comes pretty close. |

Happy that you liked it ! About the Discovery weak sides there is two more things to mention, first it's synced noise is complete useless fake as it is audible in the sync_noise_lead example and there is that awful ringing in its filter. |

The Discovery has really got som nasty problems with aliasing.
Sound raw_saw_reso_sweep16.mp3 the NL has got alot more resonace than the Disco. The filter is quite steppy. :/
But anyway what a horrible mp3 compression! Even though it says 192kbps it sounds like max 128kbps but the nord still sounds great.

i use discodsp alot and think its incredible. I also have a nord micromodular.
Obviously the nord sounds better sound quality wise. But you also have to think about that everyone uses the nord and disco sounds a bit different but similiar.
Also, if you have a fast machine you can run alot more multi timbral patches than with a hardware nord. I have no problem running 8 discos on a p4 2.8ghz machine.
Really, i think they are close enough that having one or the other isnt going to really have that much of an effect on the sound of your music once everything is mixed and mastered.
If you need a good controller and have a slow comp get the nord, otherwise just stick with disco.
Listening to the mp3 examples i think the biggest difference is the resonance on the filter. Clavia rules in that area and im sure it would be an insane effort to try to reverse engineer that filter exactly. |
