I've an Virus C and I'm happy of it.
Just a question in case on day I should add a Nord:
Is it true that NL3 has more features and better interface but the 2 at the end sounded better ?

they sound 'different', one isnt really better than the other. i have an NL3 and i think its great. if you want something that sounds like a nord 2 though, your best bet will always be a nord 2.
i also have a ti, and if i had to choose between the nl3 or ti, i would choose the ti, but live a life of regret. they are just different synths with different sounds and character. both of them are (imo) great. if you do get a nord, get a lexicon effects unit as well, it makes all the difference. now i run my nord through the virus so i can use its effects and its like a whole new synth. |

I have a Nord Lead 1 and a Virus B. I love both and would never get ride of either of them, but if someone had a gun to my head I'd probably tell them to take the Virus and keep the Nord. They are both great synths, but I generally find the Nord more usable. That is to say when I am experimenting with sounds and recording parts and come back later to do the final hard decision I generally tend to throw away about half of my Virus parts, but very rarely find I have to throw away the Nord parts. The Virus often gives me more "Oh my god, that kicks ass sounds", with the trade off for having a lot of "ah, that crap, time to start over" sounds too, where as the Nord generally doesn't "WOW" me so much, but it almost always gives me a sound that fits the mix perfectly and is what the track calls for.
Put another way, I've definately used my Nord in every track I've written since I got it in 2003, where as the Virus has been used in probably about 60% of them.
Regarding the Virus effects, I find them a mixed bag. The phasers and such I use a lot, but I almost never use the delays and reverbs. I think one of the Nord's strengths is actually the fact that is doesn't have effects as you tend to spend a bit more time getting the part to sound kick ass dry and the effects often become more like a final polish rather than a "blur of effects" over a so so sound that you might come up with on the Virus. But as I said, they are both kick ass synths and I wouldn't sell either of them.

I agre with elctrypnose but I wouldnt make a decision you will be happy with either of these however I do like the display on the virus better. and that wooden pitch bend on the nord is great. I could go on and on just buy one youll like it. Then itll probably be your favorite.

We use the Nord 2x extreemly much... I actually made my last 4-5 tracks almost entirely with sounds from it.
I think that one thing you should consider though is that the nords often are a bit more fantasy/musical theory demanding since it hasnt got the fx (and complex done sounding presets) that the virus has. I sometimes long for some preset inspiration when im wanking my nord knobs and then turn to vst synths for ideas.
but then again, if you are good at oscilator/phase etc theory (Which I'm definately not) then you'll probably be fine.
my next purchase will be a Virus and then I will be set for a long time without additional Synth buys.
-But -you know you can't live without that red devil in your live rack. so get them both!

from both machines you can get great sound, depends on what you prefer... more "acid", "liquid" NORD or more "aggressive, "sharp" VIRUS...
for me - virus is great for typical aggressive leads, and nord lead could be used for background leads, or some atmospheres... anyways this is variable... some one can use those machines in 180' different way than me
great machines at all!!

For me I find the exact opposite true. My Lead is the synth I go to for ripping sounds and the Virus for more background things.

I feel the same Jikkenteki. Ive always thought the Virus was kinda soft soundding compared to the Nordlead (1 and 2) and definetly better for creating atmospheres (pads).
Ive had a Virus B for a long time but i just sold it and got a Nordlead 2. Its not that i think that the Nordlead is a "better" synth. It totally depends on what YOU want from a synth. I dont want a do-it-all-synth wich i think the virus tries to be and it really does have tons of possibilities. To me thats just confusing because when you sit down and want to make a sound you automaticly focus on using all the features this synth has wich doesnt lead to a better sound. Thats the case with me anyway.
I want simplicity and a great tone wich the Nordlead 2 gives me. I do miss some things from the Virus though. The dual filters, digital waveforms and distortion. |
