What to buy? I am so confused...

I know I wish to buy a Nord, I don't know if to buy Modular or Lead...

What do you think?

I usually can just design endless amounts of patches... Is they a way to save an infinite number of patches on a Nord Lead? Perhaps with Flash Memory cards? Or are you limited in the amount of patches you can save?

Also, do you think the Nord Lead just has a better sound? Or, do you think it is more important now, to get the Modular, because you have more of a chance of making super cutting edge sounds?

Also... Would you say that the Nord Modular has a general " Nord Sound " or is this only present in the Lead?

I really can't check one out in person, as hardware is no slightly rare, and all the music shops around don't seem to have em, so I would have to special order.....

What do you think? Lead or Modular? ( Nord )

Thank you,

I've been owning a NordRack for a few weeks and I've owned a MicroModular before I sold it. They are from the same family but different beasts.

Pros :
- Modular : endless (?) tweeking with the editor. Good sound, good to learn different kind of synthesis. Sound inputs. You can use many filters and Fxs on one sound (opposed to the nord lead).

- NordRack : Fixed possibilities. Fast, easy, intuitive. Pre assigned midi controlers. No editor needed.

Cons :
Modular : not that easy to use (not that hard too but you need to dive into modular synthesis). needs an extra midiport to use with the editor. For simple sounds it's a bit heavy. I used to spend too much time making patches instead of making music.

Nordrack : fixed (but efficient) architecture. Bigger rack.

I tend to prefer the Nordlead because it's straightforward.

You can read this article by cosmosis about modular synthesis :

about memory : you can use memory cards but they are very expensive or use a Nordlead2X which has a larger patch capacity. There is a VST editor by audio rekon for Nordleads and racks but I haven't tried it yet though it looks very interesting :

cheap way to store hundreds of patches.

My 0.02€ advice : if you like to tweek a lot, go for the modular, else choose a nordlead. Modular G2 seems to have a really great sound but I never actually heard one (except the software demo on clavia's website).

Hi Mate,

Great Cosmosis page...

I will check out that rekon audio link a little later.

I appreciate the help. I am probably just going to go the lead route.

I say modular, too.

Just sold my nord rack2 to buy a g2 engine - unlimited possibilities - unlimited patches - no expensive oldschool pcmcia-cards - great sound....

Hi, i have a nord micro modular, and eventho is the smalles of the clavias modular (no longer made) it is such a sweet candy.

Modular goes anywhere you want. You just have to create some basic patches and you can tweak em to get trillion presets. Great sound and stability.

I have tried nordlead and it is good also. A little limited compared with modular synth but a nice and tight synth.

You want easy and quick go nordlead you want endless posibilities go modular.
