im a nord fan, and as a first synth i'd think its easier to learn, and so, its easier to get to the sounds u r looking for.
but i'd go for nord 2. nord synths have no fx, for the price of the nord 3, you can get nord 2 plus a simple fx unit, like tc electronics m300 ( http://www.dv247.com/invt/8690&bklist=icat,3,,33 ), and add delay, reverb, flager, etc to your nord. (of course u can fx also with vst, but with the fx rack u get the feeling of the synth and the fx)
well, thats what i would get!

Hi
It's a matter of taste..
I have a virus and a clavia nord modular..
the virus is the beast, the angry lead synth...
The clavia is more subtle, gentle, lovlier...
Of course also the virus can be subtle and the clavia can be beasts, but the general character may be described as I did...
I think the Tip from FluoSamsara is very good...
Nevertheless the Nord3 has also better D/A converters and newer Filters.. so it's not only the efx..
But anyway with an efx unit you are much mor flexible...
concerning the virus.. you could easily go for a second hand Virus B.. in my opinion there is no need for the C, especially if you bought an M300 then...
Hope this could help

Thanks for the advice guys. Im still not sure what to go for, but am now considering the virus b and nord lead 2. I did toy with getting a nord 2. I thought it not worth £500 for a bunch of LEDs
What tech differences are there between the Nord Lead 3 and 2?? [ besides those mentioned!]
And the difference between the B and C?

well to see the dif betwen the nl2 and the nl3 specifications check in clavia website... http://www.clavia.se/
in my opinion, the nl2 has a much more classic sound (super leads) , and its no coincidence that all the big names have one in their studio...astrix, infected, dark soho, son kite, well, the list could go on and on...
And I think also the price for the nl2 is a very fair price for what you get, id doesn't look very impressive i know, but wait till u hear it!
Of course the nl3 is also quite an impreesive piece of hardware specially with those beutifull lights to display the automatation of each knob, thats just amazing
but as subconsciousmind said that will always be a matter of taste...
check also the jp-8080 or the jp-8000, also a psy monster classic and its quite easy to find in second hand (not produced anymore for quite some time)

Virus B and C have not so much differences...
http://www.access-music.de/comparisonchart.php4
the controls changed a bit for the C, there are less knobs for lfo bu more for EFX.. since I never use, and never recommend internal efx in synths I think that virus C is even a bit more unprofessional orientated.. there are more modulation possibilities.. see the chart..
Access the manufacturer of the virus, is very good and relases update after update relasing new functions.. for the virus b this will not be continued after a while.. so this maybe a disadvantage... there was a "moog filter update for the C recently..
But anyway, I think that this is not worth the extra money. I used a friends virus A for a long time then bought myself a B, and I don't realy feel being in such an advantage.. the difference between the B and the C is even smaller..
The JP8080, 8000 have nice sounds, very original.. but I never understood rolands handling.. I had a lot of opportunities to try around on a 8080 it sounded great, but the handling ?! ..
Bye

if you are going for access:
as a virus KB user i don't think there's much difference between the B and C...
i would go for the B.. i don't really use the
internal effects of the virus.. vst effects gives
better results imo.. so no worry about it
one thing.. it is way more difficult in my opinion to
handle the sound of the virus... so if you are a beginner i recommend the nord better ...
