Maybe so. But the Dark Energy does sound very good in the sound demos. I'd rather give some extra bucks for a Prophet 12 then I'd invest the money on a Nord Lead 4, for example, these days. Developing the lust for analogue - I've been contaminated by this rise of analogue. Just haven't made up my mind yet.

Dark Energy is totally worth its cash. Leads, kicks, basslines, FX, it will add a different flavor for sure.

depend what sound you are after, dsi prophet i dont know if it s great .

the dark energy is very good imo , if you can find it around 250 euros, it s a bargain , but it s limited.

it make me think to pick the eurorack dark energy later.. it s 280 euros new wihtout a case...but that could be the gateaway to a new addiction..

the V2 is not the same, it s a saw core and multi 2 pole filter.. i m not sure if i m right but i think saw core can be more raw, while triangle core osc like on the V1 are supposed to be better for fm.

(lfos can go to 5khz on the dark energy )

MK2 sounds good to me as well + it has a multimode VCF. I'd choose that over the MK1.

On the Virus, Fm mode "pos tri" - which means positive phase (always, I know it's weird but true) triangle as carrier, produces some very unique sound - some of you here know this.

By the way, while we're at it: what synthesizers you guys like best for FM sounds? Analogue sort of FM, hardware digital, software...

@POM, do you mean there's only one fix shape for the oscillators or is it something to do with the way it handles FM modulation on each unit? Like the FM modes on the Virus, for example. (??)

so far i have find all synth that can fm can make good ones but all with different caractere..if i have to choose one i pick my analog cause when really abusing fm, with syncro for example and ring it stay lush, some synth can add artifacts and it become less pleasant when focusing on these.

in fact the first fm lead i made with it, it sound so natural that i was wondering wtf it was hapening..i was missing the artifacts that add grit... but i like this too ...all synths can bring something and some cool ones

Yep, it is different - even using such stuff as the new Monark or any oscillator that can go bellow audio range and back up. I do find the Korg Prophecy, which I own, that employed Korg's response to Yamaha's FM with another name VPM (Variable Phase Modulation) - which is basically the same thing, the different name was more a matter of dealing with patents back then. It's an ugly but interesting product, which had Dave Smith behind it, and one can get interesting tones with that monophonic digital thing.

But growing interested in analogue FM sounds. Software wise, there's plenty of good ones: the good old albino, fm8, diversion, so forth and so on...

Nord Lead 1 for me is the psy-trance FM king. Then Virus but mainly FM with the spectral waveforms, then ES2, then Albino.

For FM FX and liquidy organic FM my old Doepfer/A.Sytems modular rocked, but I get a lot of great sounds with my Slim Phatty and Minitaur combined with my Moog MF-102. Also analog does not alias which may or may not be what I want, depending on the sound I am going for.

warm organic and very pretty sounding with some gentle wiggling
or a melt your fucking face of R2d2 sledgehammer
and also a very weighty squarewave
