Nord Rack 2x looks like it would be perfect for dark psy trance, or anything at all for that matter. Thanks guys

For Dark, the Nord definitely is Perfect

+1 a nord modular would be nice too or a future retro Xs but its mono and no preset, not too far of beeing in the same family sound to me .. cutting squelchy bright... and great for heavy modulated stuff fm cross mod ring syncro.. |

I actually like the Virus more then the Nord Lead. But it's all a matter of taste. You should go to some store and test them yourself to see which one makes you smile more.
This new Nord Lead has got some fx on it - so you might want to wait for that if you're thinking about the Nord Lead. Or at least wait a bit, 'cause the Nord Lead 2x will lower its price on Ebay for sure once the new one comes up |

thats all nords but not really dark forest patchs but the caractere is there.
https://soundcloud.com/phosphene-1/sets/nord-modular-jams
the 2x probably won t sound as gritty tought...from what i heard it s more polished on top making it sound more modern and not as nice imo but it s just my impressions based on few clips..
damn that sound remind me old great times...it s just a part of my life, nord 4 ever ! virus i really enjoyed it..but too much crap have been made with it.. kinda turn me off to hear it now when i reconize it or i have some doubt..it s often sound i dont like ..while nord its kinda the opposite , maybe cause trance was better to me when it was overused.. or maybe cause no software really come close to that sound caractere so it s not everywhere making it more pleasant to me..
there is probably not even a single eq in these sample..now it sound maybe too oldschool but years ago you could make nordlead tracks wihtout any processing or just a little and it was fine..the synth seat easy beeing on thin side. i relisetned some sample yesterdays..bassline not even equed sound good but it s not today sound caractere with huge bass.. but sound as nice to me.
nice part at 17 mn... on the soundcloud link |

we bought our nord rack 2x about 350e in great condition before 2+ years...
its a really great synth and with good price
i think you cant go wrong with this...
it was our first hardware synth and it help us to learn synthesis very well with this one...
in the other side we have also a virus ti snow, yeah i know many people dont like it so much cause is more like vst but i love it. cost a lot money but i didnt regret at all...
we save some money now to buy some analog gear so i imagine will be a great comp with these digi synths that we have.
  ...into the wild.... |

@POM what's your thoughts on Waldorf's like the Blofeld? What do you think of the sound?
I think Virus has (specially until the C line) a darker character, that's somewhat evocative of some analogue synths, while the Nord has more clear highs, and Waldorf tends to the metalic and ear piercing highs and violent filters.
I like all of them, even though we're talking virtual analogue here. I can find uses for all of these characters. And there's some specs that are unique to each one of them: like the LFOs in the Waldorf can go into audio range, can be used as FM carriers to. You can get very good vocal like sounds in the Nord you can't get anywhere else, and all the squelchy sounds have a very distinct flavour to them. |

I've owned a Virus B, Polar TI and currently a Virus C. There is nothing evocative of analogue synths when using the Virus. Its as digital and plastic sounding as one can get. not saying that is necessarily a bad thing, its great to use for contrast with other more "orgranic" sounds in a mix.

I meant the way it seems like the sound has more weight on the lows and mids then highs - there's a couple of classic synthesizers with that signature. You can of course try to modulate your way into create more "analogue -like" patches, but it's not what what comes natural with such a machine for sure.
Speaking about that, I trust you own some analogue gear yourself to be able to say such a thing. What do you think about this sudden rise of new analogue little mono synthesizers that have been released recently? Like: Novation's Bass Station 2, the reincarnation of the Korg MS 20, Pulse 2 and Rocket by Waldorf, the MiniBrute?

I love the rise of new analog. I replaced my old analogue synths with new ones. They sound great, have full MIDI implementation (besides my x0xb0x) so I can automate and record parts twice for true stereo and double the VCOs/VCF...try doing that with a vintage analogue synth.
...and they are under warranty and don't cost an arm and a leg, unlike crazy collector vintage synth prices.
Awaiting for the Korg MS-20 Mini to check build quality, but at that price it will most probably end up in my studio, sooner or later.
Not interested in the Minibrute or Rocket, will wait and see what the Pulse 2 and Bass Station 2, sound like.

Yep, I'm also interested in the MS 20 - those filters give me the creeps in the sound demos. I've heard the built quality is pretty much the same, and even the somewhat shorter keys are no big deal - one gets easily used to them. But will want to test it to.
The Pulse 2 and Bass Station 2 have nice overall specs but no sound demos yet. Really like the physical interface of the later, reminds me of the good old SH 101.
What gear have you bought? |

Well, my first experience in music making was an ATARI ST running Cubase (just MIDI back then), an SH-101 a Nord Lead 1 rack, a cheap Alesis FX processor and a small Mackie desk.
That was in 1997. That's 16 years of drooling over synths, buying them and then selling them to get something else. Hence why I've had a go at a lot of different ones.

Nice! Would love to get my hands on the SH 101, always loved the sound - but they go by a fortune on second hand market!
What about software synthesizers? You get to use them much or not?
Never played with a real Moog, a bit out of my pocket's range.

I always use Logic's native drum synth, Ultrabeat, to make my kicks and from time to time I use logic's ES2. A used Slim Phatty will cost you less than a Lead 2X by the way.

in some months you will have a spot on one for not much in software,Tal make one..i asked him if he think he will get close, what is hard to model ect..he told me it will probably be is best emulation (other one is uno lx that juno emulation that sound already really great, instant goa bassline ect..) ,about the 101 the filter he have a hard time to tell the difference with his 101,osc won t be as difficult to nail from what he said, it s almost a perfect saw and envelop he is spot on too if i remember
i have check a lot more about the 101 and it seems many rate it as the worst of the Sh serie though..sh2/sh9 sound warmer/more 70s ,sh5 is more complete.. but really like the 101 sound can't wait to try the plug |
