i think eventide are the king of efx, though they are very expensive.
i was thinking about getting a lexicon mpx, but now i just use soft effects (i.e. insert/sends). theres heaps of free ones out there that are all pretty cool, and a lot of inexpensive high quality ones (the audiodamage stuff is pretty good). its easy to automate them in your sequencer as well.
for a nord vs virus they are kinda complementary, maybe you should go to a music shop and have a play on each one, and see which one you like the sound of best. or if you dont have a shop nearby you can listen to the samples online.
nords are easier to program while virus's have more options, so you can get more complex sounds, but theres a lot you can do with a nord, especially if you get into layering patches. |

Depends on what you like. Like pants said the nords a are easyier/faster to program while the virus has tons of options. I personally hate to have to many options. It just slows down the process of making sounds and makes it less fun. I would definetly take the Nordlead 2x over the virus. I also like the sound of the nord better.
If you want a cheap and good fx box for the nord then i recommend the Sony DPS-V55M. Amazing quality for the price. I had a virus once and the reverb and chorus are much better on the sony imo plus you get alot more fx. The pitchshifter is quite fun and really amazing for ambient sounds. |

TC fireworx if possible ,its hell on heart !!!
You have mentioned the lexicon mpx 550 wich has quality fx for the price...
IMO The virus is the best sounding VA available,i love the sound of my new TI,but we TI users are getting more and more upset with the synth bugs, and the fact the only thing access keeps doing is giving us deadlines to a stable OS and failing to deliver on those dates ... |

no need a ti, go for a virus c and nord 2 it s still cheaper, like avs said the virus need more programing skill to sound good but after some months of work it s a dream machine, the filters sounds so good
both are great synth but with the nord you have some good vst emulation, for the virus no one come close. |

I agree with Squarepusher, the Access Virus is the better VA available: its filter is amazing (MACHO filter) and the matrix modulation is a playground for any sound designers! If the total integration between hardware and software isn't so important to you, the Virus C *IS* THE MACHINE.
But there are a lot of beautiful synths out there... Clavia Nord 2 is great for any analog sounds (better than Virus); Yamaha AN1x is amazing for Moog/Prophet-5 emulations and really sounds like analog and beautiful; Korg MS2000 has a great sound as well; Waldorf Q has a HUGE arpeggiator and matrix modulation (I guess it sounds digital sometimes, like Nord Lead 3, but the sounds are beautiful on Q/NL3) - Micro-Q has the same engine from Q and is very cheap on USA; Novation Nova is cheap and has a liquid/smooth sound very Oberheim and it has a great bottom end; Novation Supernova 2 is a monster for trance (it was used/abused on dutch/german trance but I'm discovering it is a MONSTER for psytrance); Alesis ION lacks poliphony (4 notes) but has a lot of filters and Keyboard Magazine said it is really good (I've never played on it, though...).
Advice: if you are beginning, Nord Lead 2 rack is cheap and it allows to program any standart psytrance sound you use to listen on Mushroom, Astrix, GMS tracks.
Now, if you have money to get an Eventide H3000, Eclipse, Orville etc., you will have the same outboard fx processor used by Simon Postford, Mushroom, GMS etc.
Nord Lead 2 rack + Eventide H3000 (or higher)= dream (not so expensive) setup. |
