Yes, I say read the manual of your sequencer. Then try some VST instrument demos, find one that you like, buy it, then try and figure out what all the knobs do. When you move this one, what does that do to the sound?
READ THE MANUALS is tip #1.
It's not like a microwave manual where it just says, plug this into the wall...There is actually very usefull information in there  Good luck

Hey man,
I use FL7 and Audition too, it's definitely possible to make good sounding music with FL, just don't expect to overnight. I was never able to work my head around Cubase and other "sacred" DAWs, but I'm not going to let anyone tell me that I can't achieve what I want, unless I use Cubase or Logic.
I haven't come across anything I've wanted to do, that I couldn't in FL. Especially version 7.
Here're some basic tutorials to get started with, PM me if you have any problems. Might seem quite daunting, but the software is actually very intuitive and the quickest way to get something from your head into the real world. The help file is also really well written, check out the section "Making Music" because that covers the basic workflow.
