Ok. I've been searching this forum for some clarity on this but i seem to find quite a few contradictions.

So i'm asking directly. When is non linear phase eq used?? And when is linear phase eq used?

Reading comments not on this site suggests non linear should be used on an individual instrument and linear is best used on group tracks, whole mixes and effects.

Do you boost with one type of eq and cut with another??

Peace

Use whichever sounds best for the task at hand. There are no rules. Might be good for you to download and read the DMG EQuilibrium manual, as there's lots of good info in there.

Having said that, as a long time user of analogue EQs (which are all minimum phase), I find myself using minimum phase digital EQs most of the time. I just prefer the sound.

There was a great discussion on all this over on GS a few weeks back:

I downloaded dmg equilibrium manual and ended up downloading the demo too. Its an awesome eq.

Reading the post on GS clears things up quite a bit. The responses show its very much a personal choice. When i think about it i too tend to favour minimum phase as i use them the most.

Thanks Babaluma

No probs! It's all been minimum phase from the invention of the EQ up until about ten years ago, so it's well tested!

I do sometimes think linear phase can sound better on very high frequency transients such as hats and cymbals etc., but you gotta try it and just hear and use whichever sounds best! Like I said, I'm purely minimum phase about 99.99% of the time!           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma
