Hold your breath, here comes the second full-length album from Nomad. Will it succumb to the “sophomore slump”? I’m very pleased to emphatically say NO! In fact, Mad Attack blows DJ Mael’s debut out of the water. The song writing has matured. The sound has thickened. And, boy, can the new Nomad sound explode the dance floor! I think it’s the additional portion of groove in the bass line, and the occasional tinge of club styles to the composition… Or it could be the full-on intensity and phenomenal breaks that are maintained throughout the release… Whatever it may be, the formula works! The new Nomad sound is now ready to attack the Earth…

Not descriptive enough for you? OK, here’s a track-by-track breakdown:

1 – Mad Attack
The opening melody of this one seems strangely familiar. Maybe it’s simply because DJs all over the world have been canning it. There is some great synth work with a pallet of typical Nomad sounds, and nice bass line changes… but Mad Attack derives most of its atmospheres from different movie samples. The song rolls along, riding through different progressions, adding layer on layer. Then subtracting. Then adding… Well, you get the picture. It seems to lack the power that it potentially could have possessed.
2 – Terrible Danger
Announcing doom to the dance floor, the sample comes in… repeating… Terrible Danger… as the atmospherics build… Terrible Danger… and then the bass line storms in… Terrible Danger… But in all seriousness, this one will slaughter the crowd like cattle. It just builds and builds and builds, showing no remorse. Just when you think things are calming down (cause us dancers have to breathe too.) those alarm synth lines squiggle back in like the tide. Be ready for a ride!
3 – Altranaute
Here is a prime example of the new Nomad sound. Groove oriented, with a hint of the dark side, in an aggressive techno influenced nightmare. You may recognize some of the sound pallet from the track “Peak Detector” which Farid co-wrote with CPU. But this makes for a nice familiar connection with the dance floor (and some interesting mixes). I’d swear there is some F.A.T. in there, too. Great breaks and builds make the people scream, but does feel like it doesn’t progress fast enough in parts.
4 – Spyman (live mix)
I’ve never heard the original, but I don’t know if I want to… because this one is simply too good. The sounds have been ripped from some construction worker’s nightmare, and all mixed together in a thunderstorm of energy. A nice atmospheric break (where you can really imagine Farid noodling live on his gear) allows the dance floor to rest a bit, but it’s really only to prepare them for the onslaught ahead. Peak time stuff contained herein!
5 – Activation
At first, this one struck me as a lull point in the album, but once those distorted synths claw their way into your brain Activation really… well… activates. Like Terrible Danger, it builds on top of itself, but in much more of a melodic fashion. It’s a great little track, but for some reason it leaves me craving something more, as if it ends too soon.
6 – Sorcery
The first time I heard this track, it cast a spell on me. I simply love it. Sorcery is most definitely the darkest, spookiest track on the CD. It even has R2D2 screaming at you! Tremendous builds, phenomenal rolling bass, and creepy synths… This monster track could take Geiger’s Alien in a fight.
7 – Aura
The keyboard lines in this song seem to sing, though they’re not vocoded that I can tell. Just really pretty. Well, the more melodic ones anyway; not the industrialized atmospherics. In fact, all the sounds and arrangements in Aura are really well thought out and produced. However, its rate of progression kills the energy for me.
8 – X-Style (remix)
Tweaked hand percussion loops. Bubbly (well, for Nomad) keyboards in almost prog arrangements. Delayed distorted stabs and atmospheres. Can’t make up my mind if I like this version or the original better.
9 – Typhoon
Warning!: Typhoon has been known to blow crowds away like a tsunami. You can hear the tide coming in, faster and faster, until the alarm begins to sound. But then it’s too late, and you’re caught in the metal maelstorm. Nice (somewhat) subtle guitar and vocoded drops, and the final break… hold onto your surfboard, cause the waves get fierce!!!

Bottom Line:
A great album with some real full-on gems, and an obvious improvement over the first, but still shows room to grow… which only makes me look forward to the next work from Nomad like a junkie looks forward to his next fix. Highly recommended for all sentient beings with ears!

the more i listen to this album the more i like it... every track is really special here.
i think track #3 Altranaute is a work of genius... very psychedelic. this albums takes me well into track 6 and after that its a bit repetative and redundant....
but the first 6 are gems.

7.5/10 - cause those 6 sure make up for the last 3.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

After spending some time with the amazing artwork (man that ufo inside the cd is just wonderfull, great work by David Sub88) i decided to check out the music.

Exactly what i expected by Mael, fast and powerfull psychedelic full on music that will blow away many dancefloors all around the globe.

The production is of high standarts and the sounds are fine and clear.

There is one big problem with this album though, the music is great for the dancefloor but it is not designed for home listening at all,i mean its too fast and powerfull like i said in the beginning plus it lacks of some innovative ideas and the tracks sound repetitive after some time.

If you are a dj or a party animal then you must for sure purchase this one.

The first track Mad Attack had some nice melodies in it and i am sure that its a great hit for party time.

Tracks 2,4,5 and 6 sounded preety average to me,will work on the dancefloor but i prefer more 'intelligent' music with better atmosphere in it.

Al Tranaute is for sure the best track from this album. Its full on BUT its more groovy than the rest of the tracks in this cd.I think that Mael should concetrate a little more on this style of music cause its more home listening friendly plus it will also do its job on the dancefloor.A great tune by any means and hope that will hear more like this one by Nomad in the near future.

Track number 7,Aura,starts really nicely with a backround melody and is more morning orientated, for me this is the second best track in this album.Highly recommended.

X Style Remix (i have never heard the original by the way) is also a more morning orientated track, more groovy i would say, nice try and nice tune,it reminded me of some Astrix work by the way.

Finnally Typhoon is again a party blaster, fast music with nice sound fx and vocal samples, would like to hear an ambient track in its place though cause i prefer more chill out tunes as an outro for an artist album

I will rate this one 7/10 cause the production is really solid and cause all the tracks will work on the dancefloor. If this one was a little bit more groovy then i would have loved it more for sure

Keep up the good work Mael.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!
