hi!
could anyone please tell me the best way of cleaning samples...good softwares available, etc...ive tried using waves, but it makes it really metallic...ive also tried sonic foundry's noise reduction, but that usually makes the sample sound quite dull...maybe im doing it wrong, or maybe theres something better out there..would appreciate any help.
cheers!

Well, waves x-noise does the job imo. Did you try the presets?

BIAS SoundSoap Pro is great in cleaning sound, but so is the Waves stuff, maybe it's something with the way you use it. it's harder to clean dynamic noise (wind for example) then static noise (hum for example).           "a new art came into my mind which only you can create, the Art of Noises, the logical consequence of your marvelous innovations." In my experience either X-Noise or Sonic Foundry Noise Reduction (my personal choice) can drastically reduce broadband noise in samples. Getting the best out of them requires practise though, and they will both have negative effects on the sound if pushed too far. It might be worth trying to reduce noise in several passes, taking a new noiseprint each time.

You could try the noise reduction in Gold wave.           ________________________

thanks guys....
ur right, its the hiss in the background that is difficult to remove...no matter which program i use, if i try too much, then the sibilance and clarity of the sample is lost out...would anyone know how to bring that back...simple equing doesnt work...which is quite logical as one cant boost something that has been removed...its ok when a lot of sounds r playing together...a little bit of hiss gets swamped...but when i try solo...it just doesnt seem right...i havent tried the presets on waves....i usually take noiseprints and work my way through the sample depending on the kind of noises there are....but the more i do, the more it gets mettalic...cool edit sounds like a good idea though...will try it now...

If you're using Sonic Foundry noise reduction, make sure you have Mode 3 selected and as many bands in the noiseprint window as you can.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

it's not easy to remove dynamic noise, usally you have to compromise between reduction and losing hi-end.
the way I would use the X-Noise is: first try to get the best noise profile, then take the reduction up and then play with the threshold while I'm listening to the noise being removed only (diff). that way I'm making sure that I don't loose too much sibilance.
the nice thing about SoundSoap Pro is that you have even beter control. you can apply the reduction only on certain freq's, which makes it a nice filter tool too.           "a new art came into my mind which only you can create, the Art of Noises, the logical consequence of your marvelous innovations." Applying NR to certain frequencies only is possible with SFNR too, by editing the noiseprint to remove the parts of it that you don't want to affect your sample. SFNR also gives you the option to boost whichever part of the top end your NR has reduced.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
