No EQ on bass

How about this? I've recently been stuck on mixing bass in a few of my tracks, and finally I kinda said "fuckit" and took away the EQ on the currently open project.

Suddenly, the whole mix opened up (?) and the bass, of course, shone through absurdly clear.

Now, when it comes to psytrance bass, I know cutting a harmonic or two can help make it fit with the kick. But other than that - open EQ seems to be a magic solution to so many of my issues.

I've tried it on a couple other tracks and I just cannot believe how much time I've wasted trying to EQ my bass when I should have left it the fuck alone.

Thoughts?           Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut

always same storie mate, the best the source and the less processing to get where you want the less troubles.. overprocessing ,overequing can be comon mistake specially in room that are not that great.

I agree less is better.. although if you know how to use a spectrum analyzer eg SPAN... using a bit of eq to boost a freqency can make a difference the trick is not over eq but to boost/cut the "right" frequency / frequencies SPAN is free and its from voxengo ... solo the kick to find out its key and match bass to the same key Do not let them overlap too much kick has its space and bass has its place i tend to boost my bass at between 90 to 150 khz but only a "subtle peak" i cut high frecuencies to about 12 hrz leaving room for hats using a specrtrum anilizer helps... good luck BoOM alot

PS: SPAN will give you a visual representation of the kick and bass when either sound is in solo.........

What I like to do is just decrease a little bit around the 60hz or so. You don't need too much "zzzuuuum" if your track is in high bpm.

Another trick I use is I open up 3 send effects, 1 with EQ boost on low end, 1 with eq boost high end, and 1 with notch and boost both high and low end. Then put 1 compressor on each with very fast attack and noticable threshold.

Now on your normal basschannel load up this send effect / bus and click in the prefade button. Sweep up and down with the amount and see where it should fit. This way your bass does not get processed alot in the bass channel but you add other frequencies to it (not really, but enhancing them).

Try it out. If it's not clear enough just and and I will see how I can help. Btw I am using Cubase.

yes, parallel compression is awesome, I use New York compression on all by basses and some kicks, although not so much on the kicks lately....

I will have to try it with multiple channels for the multiple bandwidths.
