Nick Muir is a well-known name to progressive-house lovers, with heaps of tracks released at some of the hottest labels such as Audiotherapy, Mashtronic, Bedrock, Renaissance, Nu Republic to name but a few. In the past, his productions have given rise to interesting collabs and rmxes with such DJ producers as Hernan Cattaneo, Pig & Dan, Sasha Digweed, Phatjack, Mashtronic, Inkfish etc.
After a collosal release a couple of weeks ago on his side label eVapour8, Aussie DJ fame and label manager Kasey Taylor returns with a 4 track EP from the UK veteran producer, this time on his main label Vapour recordings.
1. Airtight
The original mix is rooted in prog-house and plays a light distorted undulating bass sprinkled with sporadic percussion arrangements that discreetly alludes to tech house. It develops with a nice build up relying on a loop of progressively soaring synths intertwining two arpeggiated lines and culminates in the climatic last break. It should have a strong impact if played at sunrise. Yet, my listening experience is disturbed by the fact that the arpeggiated lead used is very similar to that in the last sequence of Elegant Universe’s recent Grizzly, and, as a result, even the little twists in the bassline seem to be derived from that piece. Not that these devices are the exclusive right of any particular producer per se, since they are pretty basic ones, but this similarity somewhat bugs me. Still a good morning track.
2. Monaque takes the piece to a combo of prog-house and minimal arrangements such as the typical drippling synth lines. The arpeggio vanishes to let in a more acid line underlayed by a more pumping bassline. Basically more sober, but nonetheless effective even though the piece is more restrained.
3. D-Nox & Beckers deliver a another mix that is closer to the spirit of the seminal track, notably beacuse of the (so-called) original’s presence of the arppegiated theme, but things don’t remain so simple : the duo uses a more thumping technoish bass/kick combo, pitch down the theme or transpose it, sprinkle the right effects here and there, and the result is more sexy and all in all more “original” than Muir’s piece. Has my preference.
4. Talented UK producer Avilo returns to Vapour to deliver the last rmx. This track reverts to prog-house and features an atmospheric mood that will suit the emotional demand of clubbers, spiced up by delayed percussions. Not a groundbreaking piece but it sure does the trick pretty well.
Bottom line:
Nice release with reliable and varied dj tools that each fits a different moment of the party. But the strongest asset is IMHO the D-Nox & Beckers mix.
