Right now, I already have some very nice Vst synths, like Albino, Z3ta, Absynth, V-Station and some others.
But I'd still like to have a real synth like an Access Virus or so.
What would you reccomend?
I don't really want to spend too much money, so I've been thinking of the options:
Either a second hand Access Virus B.
Roland Sh-201
Alesis Micro
Korg Micro X
Besides the point that it needs to make nice grunchy hard Psy Sounds, I'd also like a synth that offers plenty of modulation possibilities.
Which of the above stated would you reccomend? |

VIRUS!!! I got an "a" no contest. I ve used all except sh201 micron has ok sounds but is a pain to program and isnt as tweakable . MicroKorg has a quick easy vocoder but once again isnt very tweakable and has mini keys which are a pain I got a virus A and it blew away my plugins and my nord lead2 the filters are smooth and the saw is sharp realsharp if you cant afford it yet wait for the funds.

get a virus, its what you want and will give you the sound you want so just go get it!
i really think nords are great for learning the basics of synthesis on, but if you know your way around those soft synths and want a lot of modulation options, a virus sounds right up your alley |

the virus contains besided of 3 LFOs an intern modulation matrix where you can link different sources to all important destinations, modulating each other. but beware of the virus, its like a wild horse waiting for the cowboy who is strong enough to ride it.

if you don t have a keyboard the virus kb is a good choice.synth + controller+keyboard for a good price and they are built like a tank. |

or a virus powercore VSTi if you already have a keyboard. you'll need to buy a powercore DSP card and the virus software. it's basically a virus b in tearms of architecture and sounds exactly like one too. working with software is so much easier than hardware...

Would you think, hardware synths like the Virus still beat softsynths?
Or is this unhearable in the mix?
I wonder, cause I could get a Virus B for a real good price, but still If I don't need it because I already own some very good Vst synths, than it would be just a waste of money. |

for something like psychedelic fullon you dont need a virus realy, because you aim for that clean cristal sound, which today good software is able to handle (blue for example) even a little bit cleaner as the virus (because of less modulation factors)
if you looking for that deep plastic or vinyl-like analog feeling for electro/prog productions the virus is a very good choice. i dont use any software-vsti to 99% since i have the virus. anyhow if you can get a B for a good price, grab it!

It's 400 Euros.
the price seems very good to me.
But I never like to really record hardware synth, on the other hand I do like to have something in front of me with knobs and stufff:-)

beware of older viruses.
my housemates virus kb's osc 1 now squeals - we estimate it to be 5 years old...
basically it isnt usable anymore, and no one knows how to fix it.
anything with dsps and a mainboard has a use by date - of course some last longer than others
My TI already has hardware issues and goes back next week
cheers
