with velocity you can t totally archieve the same feel as sidechaining or volume automation, but it can work great too but it dont offer the same amount of control for fine tuning that is sometimes welcom.
personnaly i use both, first velocity to get the feel as close as possible and then sometimes sidechaining on top for fine adjustement. used volume automation too with good sucess.. spliting the bass...all these technics can work great it just depend in what mood you are.

one thing that worth experimentating with spilitng the bassline is to delay some frequencies range and or use phase shift, it could maybe lead to good result

i tried for a few minutes and it seems it can work good, not too sure with my room sound though but it sounded good here ,some sweet spots with tighter sound .
then depends if one want to go for a natural pure sound ,just using a crossover in the path may and will probably ruin the sound on a great sounding analog saw
