Extra tip

A nice way to sidechain the bass with the kick is to split the bass in two channels, then lowpass and highpass each channel and sidechain the lowpass channel to the kick. If you want do that also with highpass channel but with less threshold (-3db -4db). With this way the body of the bass is more present and fit much better with the kick.

here is an example:

How about applying this cut and raise EQ-ing to other sounds in your mix?
Usually highpassing your sounds is the way to go, but I could imagine making small cuts here and there to make room for the bassline/kick would result in a better mix.

it s not necesseray always good to do this for the reason than the kick and bassline rarely play at same time in today psytrance, it sure can work though but it s more down to the kick and bassline frequency response relation than fighting for space imo

sidechaining kick bassline ,same it s not for frequency clash most of the time iit s used in psytrance but for groove .
depends if the kick tail play at same time as the bassline, these eq technics and sidechaining can work well

you can acquire that same groove by adjusting where the bassnote is or using a clip volume automation on longer notes

You will compress the track later and then you will know why sidechaining is important... it just makes it cleaner. Colin has an interesting trick posted somewhere in here. Essentially instead of sidechaining he uses phase inversion, given the new 2 minute snipps from OOOds forthcoming album I would say he is highly successful with it.           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

As far as never putting notes where the kick is vs. having K B hit at the same time there are pros and cons to both it just depends on the style, feel, etc.

Colin's suggetion about inverting the phase of a return track that is gated by the kick is excellent - I have been using it since the idea appeared on this forum. Its easier on the CPU, easier to use, and depending on the gate used, has all the adjustability of the SC comp except the "compression ratio" (maybe there are gates that have this type of setting... I am not sure).

Spicey suggested that automating the volume of the bass note that follows the kick can be useful in establishing a groove. I will expand upon that and say that by mapping the velocity of the note in question to the cutoff freq of the filter and the volume together and then setting that velocity value different from the other notes of the bassline, good results can be achieved.           --
