hi imperets im coming from similar background -spanish/jazz guitar, rock bands.. i was trying to make trance at 2003 did 3 tracks really bad production if u can call it that way  heres a link

i take a long break since then and recently (3 months ago) i started get back to it and make my #4 track to a remix contest (my first remix) heres the link (the one with the monkey):

i think the production is also shity but i think its good enough for making it on shity computer speakers (save money now for gear now that im a serious man:))
so i feel improvement these days i dig lots of articles, tutorials and music as allways..
about structure listen to Astrix's first album all tracks have a classic fullon structure. its not
stealing the same as in rock music.
about sounds and presets i think u can do what u want and it will be ok sometimes tweaking this sometimes tweaking that.
so i think best advise for u and for me is take it step by step learn how to make kicks, bass, how the melt them together then move to the next step. this forum is great for finding this kind of knowledge use the search engine.
