it's funny how many metal heads drift to psytrance actually.. i'd assume you've heard enough to know what it should sound like, yes?
for a beginner, i would break it down like this.
1. Drums. Punchy and maintaining energy. These are the bones around which the rest of the track grows around.. (which doesn't necessarily mean "start with drums first always," rather thay they provide a large part of the structure). The kick serves as constant power, like a heartbeat, hats add speed and motion, snare adds more power.
2. Bassline. hypnotic and almost always created using a saw wave and filter. There are a number of common bass rhythms that are 'standard.' This is the muscle of the track, and is essential to the overall groove.
3. Lead synths. Provide flavor, melody, and additional rhythm. Can be short, repeating phrases, or longer more developed melodies. Tells the story.
4. Rhythmic synths. Can add a sense of harmony, motion, or atmosphere. Both tonal and atonal synth sounds are common.
5. Atmospheric sounds. Float above everything and adds energy, essentially gluing it all together. The skin. Can be as simple as white noise or as complex as a 100 piece choir, timestretched....
By no means do you NEED every one of these elements in a track, but they are things you will commonly hear.
To build a track, start with a groove.. slowly add elements to build energy to a peak.. maintain it a while then bring it back down.
In a nutshell. There is no formula, but formulas can be useful at first. Find tracks you love and try to mimic those. Electronic music is very different from other types, and it will take a lot of getting used to.. just be patient.
For details, check the "MOTHER OF ALL" threads, they can be found in a sticky.

ive had a metalband too and played guitar lol.
im surprised how fast you got such a beat.
knowing your DAW is essencial.
learning basic synthesis too.
dont forget good speakers, you wont be able to produce with 30$ speakers. (recommendation yamaha hs80m)
best thing you can do is to copy professional tracks,
and see whats your mistakes and read every single upcoming post here

Thanks for the advice everyone
What is DAW ?
orgytime- I'm surprised how you actually right about the speakers .
I have a friend that produce electronic music and have expensive equipment .
The difference in sounds is HUGE . This small part of track that I posted here sounds decent on my 2 little speakers or with headphones but when I listened to this one on his computer it sounds very different ( actually really shity )
Do you actually think that a beginner should get good speakers ? I started only 2 weeks ago

Hey, for two weeks that sounds pretty good
DAW _ digital Audio Workstation - it's the program where you make the music
I suggest you dive straight into sound synthesis, move knobs over time, in an expressive way. The most common is the filter cutoff, with your touch of resonance (or Q). It works superb on top of some white noise and works really well followed by delays.
Just don't worry too much about the equipment, it's very useful yes but it's not completely necessary.
If you have a friend with some knowledge and a studio, try to get as much information as you can from him. And if you get a change, record some guitar leads to put into your tracks
The "new to psytrance" question has been answered here too many times, try exploring this forum, and if you come up with a more specific question dont hesitate to ask here

yes, you should get good speakers. if you're at all serious about production, at least invest in some hm80s (i use them, but would realllllllyyyyyy like something better). they'll take you through the first few years of learning.
and by then, you'll long for something better and proper acoustic panels
this is not a cheap hobby :/

My recommendation to start off with
1. Invest in a licensed copy of Ableton/Cubase/Logic [~550U$]
2. Get an externasl USB/Firewire Sound Card[~150U$]
3. Small 2 Octave Midi Controller [~200U$]
4. Reference Studio Monitors [Minimum 700U$][MANY Out there], go to the showrooms and take your favorite PSYTRANCE CD with you - listen to them and pick one that "Sounds Good" to your ears!
Get a MAC Book PRO if you can.....!
and stick to it! |

Dude u suggest someone who been producing for 2 weeks to spend 1600 dollars on equipment?, you work for some kind of audio store?.
My suggestion is just too begin, experiment, theres ALOT to learn so just try everything you can, see what everything does. How to use ure program, learn how to use delays, reverbs, fx plugins, then basics of synthesis.

Get to know your shit, and move on to hardware when you feel like you know enough sbout digital synthesis.
And PoM is right, follow your own flow, it's great to have influences, but it's not that great to be in some artist's shadow. Good luck.

My recommendation to start off with
1.Download a cracked copy of Ableton/Cubase/Logic and all VSTs you can.
2. Dont buy an audio card until you know what exactly it can do for you.
3. Dont buy a midi controller until you play live.
4. You are good with 2 cheap pc speakers as long as you have subwoofer.
Profit!
This is kind of a joke but not really... the main idea is, know very well what you are doing and only buy and invest in gear / software when your skills demand it.
No point in getting better stuff you don't know how to use, no point in getting high end equipment if you don't have your ears trained enough to hear the difference.
There is so much you can do even with free software and it will take a long before you actually make something with the quality standards of released music.
So my true advice would be:
- Know about psytrance history and electronica history, specially about hardware and techniques that make electronica what it is today.
- Learn substractive synthesis and all about audio and music production as you can.
- Invest a lot of time in getting a clean mix and interesting sound development. The art of making everything just fit and flow with drive and control in perfect balance.
- Understand that psytrance is half about music and half about sound design and this parts should work together a intelligent design aimed to enhance a trance experience.
- Understand trance and how to use it to transmit vibes / feelings / ideas into listeners brains - body.
- Have fun
- If you are really into this, never give up no mater how frustrated you get to feel.
cheers. |
