Hi all,
I am currently creating my next video tutorial course which will be called "Sound Design".
I thought I would ask you guys if there is anything in particular that you would like to see/expect in a course like this?
I will be covering subjects like bass and kick drum creation but also things like sampling techniques, real world sound manipulation, synthesis etc and will be using hardware and software.
Any and all ideas appreciated and will be considered for inclusion on the course.
all the best,
Mark

I'm sure this is already planned to be included, but step by step explanations of different types of synthesis (additive, subtractive, analog vs. analog modeling, etc.) as well as explanations of the different steps a signal takes through synthesis (OSC - Amp/Filter Envelope - LFO etc.) takes. As well as explanations for more obscure parameters, such as envelope key follow, etc. All in everyday terms that beginners can understand.

Hi Axis,
This is definately going top be part of the course, however i am not sure how deep i will go with this as this is not a "synthesis" course per se.
However saying that i wil lbe showing people how to "create" synths from scratch using Reaktor and Synth Edit so the explanations will come with that section of the course naturally.
I do, however, see your suggestion as an explanation of the more obscure parameters such as key follow a stonking good idea and have incorporated it all ready - so thanks for that
all the best,
Mark

some ideas on ayering technics would be nice i think..
not just for synth lines but even for movie kinda fx stuff..like how to combine specific samples to reach this or that kinda sound f. e. a crashed wall or overcooking water..
stuff like that..

A cool thing would be if you show a lot of examples of dirrefent modulationoptions and how thay affect the sound..
A good xapmle is in the virus tutorial when the in one xample is letting the filter envelope control its own attack and decay time witch causes convexity in the attack..=)
And a simpler one..when u modulate the pitch on the osc u get a vibrato sound (of course) =)
More of this examples and how it sounds!!! =)

1.- Answer most of the FAQ in this forum:
- how to make killarg israeli bassline?
- how to make psy squelch / acid fart?
- how to make psy talking lead?
- how to make my sound wide and fat?
2.- Profit
Well, actually i do really think you should teach about "sound design". I mean formal DESIGN and what it takes to actually invent and think soundwise, something oriented to all kinds of music / sound, not only psy... how to create amazing sound / music to achieve jaw droppin' results, i mean really teach how to design stuff and then how to apply that into real production (like a psy track or a videogame theme, i don't know, whatever real world example suites you).
MHO.
BTW This is my 303 post xD Let that acidlines flow. |

you could use a synth and show what are all the functions and how to use them and how it affect the sound , then ppl ll learn how to translate the sound in their head into the synth more easily , could be a good way of teaching synthesis but it would need lot of work . a tutorial on how to make this sound would be more easy to set up i guess |

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your suggestions, i will take them on board.
Somethign i should make plain though, this will NOT be a synthesis course nor will it be about Psy Trance.
I will be creating a course about using sounds constructively, so yes all the basic stuff will be there, bass, kicks, leads, pads etc but the main focus will be designing and or sculpting sounds from different origins, like oscillators yes but also nature, humans, inanimate objects etc to create something different. These techniques will involve using foley sounds of any and all sources i can find.
Also sampling will be a huge part of this course also, revolving around how to use samplers to mangle sounds from 1 thing to another but also how to create unusual, unique instruments using samplers.
And as mentioned above synthesis is involved and i plan to show you how to create your own synths for specific types of sounds etc, i will probably utilise Reaktor and Synth edit for these videos.
Anyhoo keep the suggestions coming, they are appreciated.
all the best,
Mark

I think it would be neat to learn techniques such as mangling lots of animal noises together to produce the dinosaur noises from "Jurassic Park", or mangling machine noises to produce those super cool "Transformers" sounds. I think sound manipulation on that sort of level holds great potential for other creative uses.
