Your levels seem way off.. you kick and bass should dominate, and are just lost in the mix.. and your high hat is too prominent

But lot's of wacky ideas in there Keep it up!           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

thanks, that's definitely true, probably need to do a few more mixdowns before it's complete, I appreciate the comment!

Also, any tips on group compression? I like to put one at least on my leads/synths group (most of the sounds in the track) and usually my kb bus channel. KB only 2-2.5 ratio not hitting often, other group compressor I adjust to get around -3db peak on the master.
Often I'll compress all my percussion sounds together as well, need to start with just turning them down more.

Thanks!          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

2-2.5 ratio can be huge if the threshold is set low enough.. just think about it: the amplitude between the signal amplitude and your threshold will be reduced to half, or even 2.5, and that can be a lot - however, forget the numbers, and do what sounds good.

I usually use a compressor on the beat (kick+bass), a compressor on the drums and a compressor and expander on the main bus on the mastering section, all set to taste. Either than that, there's no rules, ass I live to keep the dynamics of my sounds. I won't say don't use a compressor on all the synths, but if you get each synth right, do a good arrangement and mixing and have everything under control, you shouldn't need a compressor.

In your case, it's more to have automated control over heavy peaks, like a limiter, as the signal doesn't hit the threshold often. I say is something sporadically peaks, compress just that to control the peaks, and do a better mix.

As long as you have a good purpose for each compressor, I say keep them out. For the beat, i use it to gel the K+B together and define the transients and pump. For the perc, since perc sounds have really loud transients in comparison with the body, to help control the peaks, but always at the cost of dynamics. On the mastering section, to furthermore control the tune peaks and help gel everything a bit together, and on each synth when necessary to control the dynamics.

Nevertheless, you've got me thinking about ways to prove myself wrong, such as using the compression to build layers and keep dominance in the layer cake.. but when the compressor is being pushed hard, it would just kill the dynamics of the signal -> which could end up being a good thing. Much to experiment!

Hope I helped           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

Yeah that helps. I don't set my thresholds too low, especially when compressing groups. I try to keep my compression unnocticable but using a 10ms lookahead and adjusting attack/release. I'll use limiters here and there to cut off peaks with a 6ms lookahead.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound
