i dont want to start a war here or anything...but i just have to say that the kick bass tutorial video is wrong in so many ways...
its nice that someone has made this and put effort in to this...but it just not the way you eq kick and bass.
this kind of info if wrong even for beginners.
such hpf on kick and bass with waves eqs makes plastic sound.

I actually use the waves req and I do the hipass and lo pass on it... maybe not as hi as the guy does, but I honestly think that the waves req is one of the best eq around. I've never had an issue with a plasticy sound using those... the native cubase eqs though, that's a different story...

I definitely do have issues with some of the things he discussed, but some of the things he mentioned were pretty spot on, or stuff that I was actually doing already... Can't say I learned anything new from it, but some of the info is quite correct... However if anyone ever tries to make a track where their kick and bass are -0.1 then they'll totally learn that it will not work like that... I tend to like my kick bass group channel to be no louder than -9db, but that's what seems to work for me... And the whole bass on the kick thing is something I wouldn't recommend doing unless they would think about how it effects their kick... That could be a reason why he hipasses both kick and bass at something like 50hz, but yeah I dunno... He didn't discuss sidechaining in that particular video, but I would think that you wouldn't wanna do the bass on the kick without discussing that too.          An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

HI Guys

Glad you like the videos.

OHZ & Mubali

I understand that everything is not to everyones tastes, there are definately more ways to do the things i have done on these videos.

I am not stating that this is the only way or the "correct" way (whatever that is). These videos are simply to show a method of Eq`ing Kick and Bass together to make them fit, nothing more.

It is a hugely basic video, it was done due to direct requests from several people who use my videos.

Things like putting bass on the kick and 0.1 limiting where just examples of how to use the tools, they where not intended to make people think that this was the correct and only way to use these tools, if it was taken like that, i appologise for any confusion.

However, i do have a lot of people who email me at my info@soundmagus.co.uk address and whenever i make new videos i email all of them with more details of "why" the videos have been made and what the main purpose of the videos are" maybe in the future when i post videos i will also post the email i send out.
I appreciate your comments and i would like to clear something up - when doing these videos i am showing basic settings, nothing is as in depth and accurate as i would make it when making my own music, these videos are NOT "copy this and its right videos" they are guidelines and are purposefully short and sketchy hence forcing users, especially beginners to experiment and find the best way for themselves.

With regards to the kick on the bass, i do this constantly and offcourse its sidechained, i wouldnt do it otherwise. I realise now i should have mentioned this in the video (but didnt) so again i appologise for that.

With regards to the limiting, u will notice that its not on the kick/bass group channel, it is on the master channel (which i advise not to do) and is simply a short discussion on what Limiting is and how you can use it to make your music louder etc.

Ohz i have to say that this may be wrong, in your opinion but using these techniques i find my bass and kick can be eq`d perfectly together without sounding "plastic" and infact i was taught these techniques by Israeli producers who are currently very popular in the scene and very succesful. Now i am not saying because of this they are correct, or their methods are the correct ones to use but you need to state when you say such strong things that this is just in your opinion, diffrent things work for different people, production methods, ideas etc.

I knew when i started these videos i was putting myself up for criticism and accepted that most people would understand that these videos are very general and based on my experiences and opinions. The videos are made and show techniques i use and have found to work, this however doesnt mean they will work for everyone, all i ask is that u download them and check them out, if they work for you great, if not then i hope they at least spark something inside, even if its to ask for something else, to advise me on another way to do something that might work for you etc.

I simply tried to start a knowledge base of the kind of thing everyone likes and finds useful, which i think i am achieving.

thanks

Mark
