myself an amd addict, I'd recommend you to wait 1 or 2 months, as intel is releasing conroe cpu's to the market. Amd dualcore prices are dropping as we post, so you'll get a nice deal soon.
I recommend following hardware:
Mainboard: Nforce4 Motherboard (+: Gigabyte, Abit, DFI / -: MSI, Abit)
CPU: AMD X2. Lowest is 3800+, think that's gonna be okay. The higher the better, look out for L1 and L2 cache.)
Ram: 2 gigabyte should be affordable. If you work with lots of samples, you're going to need that much. Be sure to get matched pairs. Kingston offers such deals, Geil, Mushkin, OZ, many others.
Graphic Card: since nforce4 mainboard do have problems with prioritizing things on the PCI bus, I'd recommend getting a cheap PCI Express Graphic Card. ATI 9200 works good, the newer generation is ATI x1000, x1300, something in that ballpark.
Soundcard: M-Audio Audiophile, RME, all shape and sizes. When you record outboard synths, accoustic instruments, I'd go for a rme card.
Hard drives: S-Ata drives feature an individual controller for every drive. so you get fast access times. Samsung has nice drives. Raptors should be alright too. Get enough space for audio production. 250 - 300 gigs are affordable nowadays.

hallo
im not very into computers but as im doing what im doing im obligged to know some issues and can share it here.
concering CPU im AMD as well, having 2 x AMD athlon 2600+, 2133mhz of clock each other. no way to have 1 cpu sustem, be aware. soft is optimized to work with CPU matrix especially nuendo which is optimized even for AMD and that means some instructions are used to fast some operations for audio. i absolutely agree with sideFXed that more = better. but i have that i have and i dont want to change it for next half year.... cool down yourself... its always the same story, you can update your PC every 3 months but it is not cost effective and there is no way not to kill your CPUs with plugins, you use it more and more and then comes TRUTH, newest plugins, more extensive algorithms etc and you will always have a chance to reach 100% of performance and need to bounce to audio...
RAM: 1 have 1gb kingston in one piece and thats enough, sever ECC full error corection, tahts expensive. but better buy faster CPUs.
DISK: no porblem with normal ata. sata is more than enough. i work sometimes with like 30 tracks of audio 24_44,1 and disk is not even giving me a sign stornger than 1% of speed usage... disk is not a problem. i use 4 x 200 gb WD
Soundcard is another problem and has to be discussed separately.
graphic: dualhead g400 matrox is an old card but suitable for audio studios, more i have next one on PCI, matrox millenium but i dont remember exactc symbol. anyway i use 3x17" monitors and it gives comfort of work in Nuendo. dont forget aobut is.
mainboard: i have gigabyte after having probably MSI, dont remember. anyway gigabyte is kind of standard but im not an expert to talk about it.
if any question please ask but im more oriented in using this equipement than in technical specifications... if you have questions concering audioengeenering im a right person.
all the best

here is my machine .. works great
*asus motherboard (that fit to all other features offcourse)
*AMD 3800 duo core (64bit for the future)
*1 giga ram (Corsair Xmas - ultra low latency)
*2 s-ata hard disks (160gb , 200gb) i reccomend 2 seperate 160's , me and couple of friends had problems with 200+gb HD
*graphic card - pci express with 256mb internal memory (not shared)
*soundcard: m-audio delta/audiophile
realy happy with that

I set up recently a new pc which is working greatly and very fast as well.
ASUS A8N-CSM-VN mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3800+(at a bargain price and until dual core prices drop)
OZ 1GB Ram
Maxtor 250GB S-ATA2 HD
XFX GeForce 6200 PCI-Express(Dual VGA)
3x20" Benq FP202W monitors
I used to work with cubase sx3 and acid pro, but after the arrival of Acid Pro 6.0 a couple of months ago, i didn't even install cubase and probably i'll never will(unless it gets like Acid).
Anyway, with the above configuration i am able to have more than 10 VST's opened at all times, half of them being heavy ones(like Z3+a), at least 10-15 audio tracks with effects on them and no "complaints" from either the CPU or the Hard Disk.

I post my setup i finished working on like a year ago and it stills beats most of the mfs in here. With this i can reach 70 channel lanes in Ableton Live ( one of the heaviest softwares around ), being 30 of them at least with virtual instruments and the other 40 bounced into audio mixdowns.
AMD Athlon 64 SD@4400+ 1MBL2C (275x10 1:1)
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinium NForce3 Ultra
OCZ EL Platinium Rev2 2x512 @ DDR550+
MSI Radeon RX9550TD 128bits 128mbs
Enermax Coolergiant SLI-Ready 535w
Western Digital WD740 Raptor
ThermalTake Xaser III Skull VM3000
ThermalRight XP90A+Panaflo92m+AS5
enjoy it!
