hey johnny,
amd has been proven to be better cpu for
mathemathic calculations, the p4 has a problem with
its floting point calcuilations, and this problem take a big place
when you work with audio.
my suggestion is that you check some amd forums,
and see what is better for your budget.
try the amd64 socket 754 3.2Ghz, i think its
a good choise comparing the price.
if its too expensive try to read about amd athonXP 3200.
about the ram ... a very important issue
nowadays, i recommand OCz or Corsair,
each cpu, and board goes with its specific memory. |

i donno about pentium really much,
but whatever you buy, check at the ram factory web,
that the specific ram you take will be completely
compatible with the motherboard.
take only checked combos. |

orange, if you ask me.. hehe
i really recommand OCz. (Corsair and Mushkin also very good)
the quality ROCKS and the price much lower than cosair for instance.
check their web: http://www.ocztechnology.com
you can pick their best ram type for your system,
and if you have any questions you can ask there
in OCz professional forums for all the memory issues.
similar to other famous memories like kingston,
the OCz has lifetime warranty, so nothing to worry about.

thanx for the help guys
i got my choices down to this:
*p4 3.0 1m cache with asus p4p800 deluxe
or
*athelon 64 3200 with msi k8n neo platinum
i checked forums and articals trying to decide amd or intel and i think amd is suposed 2 be better for audio after all i read.
i read somewhere that the only think p4 is better is in " hyper-Threading ", what does it mean?

Hey Jonny i would go for the AMD64 (actually i plan to do so in the near future) cause it's better investment in the future when the new 64Bit Windows OS will arrive and with it all the major vendors will release compatible 64Bit drivers for their hardware (M-Audio for example already did). Also all the newest Audio software is planned to have 64Bit compatibility like the 3rd SX that is being released today
So basically today it doesn't make much difference, but in 1 year or so it will make a bigger difference. I personally holding the purchase until next year.
Good luck

Hyper-Thread is a technology that emulates processors.... so you use parallel programs (that work in parallel processors or clusters) in your computer with only one hyper-threading processor like if you have two processors...
In my opinion it´s more marketing than evolution, at least for now, when few programs work in parallel... Also the benchmarks are not that good...
My Athlon 2200+ works faster than my cluster of 4 P4 2600 (each processor with hyper-thread, and Openmosix, so theorically 8 processors) for some jobs, even when I´m listening to music at the same time...
