I'm sorry, I browsed the Mother of All monitors thread but I'm not sure how often its updated.

Forgive my cheekiness in starting a new topic.

I've saved up a budget of around £1000GBP for some new monitors to replace my BX5a's which are starting to show their weaknesses as I get better at what I'm listening for and having heard other speakers.

I'm also looking to move up from 4" to 8" woofers to get better low end.

I was blown away when I heard a set of Tannoys recently, but I'm not sure what model they were. I did some research and I'm very interested in the Precision 8D's.

Mackie HR824's have been getting some good reviews recently and I'd be interested to hear some feedback on those.

The final option for around £1000 are the KRK VXT8's.

There are no showrooms I know where they stock all 3 models, and I know I'm not skillful enough to go to listen to each individually and remember what they sound like, in different spaces, and make a comparative judgement.

Can anyone point me in the right direction. I'm mainly going by reviews and word of mouth as I doubt I'll have a chance to check them out

So at the moment, from the looking around that I've done, it's between the

KRK VXT8's
Mackie HR824's
Precision 8D's

I welcome other suggestions for that price range.

I really don't know why the Tannoys is not more popular.
I got the Reveal 8D's and think they are great.
Some stuff sounds like total crap on them and some really sweet...they really are good at making flaws in mixes obvious as well as making good mixes sound great and I find the sound very non-fatiguing.
From the people I heard who use the precisions they seems to have only praise for them.

Before I got the Reveals I was considering Dynaudios and Adams...if you want the best monitors in that price range I think that's the brands you should be looking at.
Dynaudios excel in tight defined bass in my experience, but have a bit less definition in the mids and highs compared to the Tannoy's.
The Adams I haven't had a chance to try but many people rave about them and you hardly ever read a negative word about them.

I thought the point of monitors was to show up as many flaws as possible so you can fix them and get a great sound across the board. I simply can't do any better on the monitors I have now. I don't think that's a cop out either, the low end is totally undefined and the high lacks imaging clarity.

The Tannoys I managed to try my mixes on revealed a lot of room for improvement, which is what I want. I am leaning towards them more and more.. but I have also heard great things about Adams.

Thanks for the feedback, I think I just need people to thrash it out with as making a big purchase semi-blind is no big thing for me.

Yeah...the point is not that they should sound good but rather truthful.
Many people make the mistake of going to a shop and listen to different brands and pick the one they think sounds best, which many times means the one least suitable as a studio monitors.

Having said that, many really good monitors that is easy to get a good mix on is IMO a bit too harsh and fatiguing to work on for extended periods.
That's the prime reason I really like my 8D's...they are not too harsh and good mixes can sound really sweet, but at the same time less good mixes will be exposed as well.

Seems like I'm the only one on Isra that is a fan of Tannoys though...but you can do a search on gearsluts and you will get some more opinions on them.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

I hear that a lot - either you'll love or hate the sound, that some monitors have a very distinct sound. I would have hoped that the more money you spend, the more accurate they become and the better work you can do with them.

The more I research the topic, it increasingly looks like a minefield!

1800Euro is a little over 1000GBP so those Adam p22 are a possibility. I'm going to try and make it into a shop in London today and try as many as I can.

Howdy ! Also consider the Dynaudio BM15 passive monitors in combination with a decent amp. I use this combination and i'm loving it, especially the extended bass-sound you get from the large woofers. Check this if you want to read more: http://recording.org/reviews-30.html

Anyhow, from what i gathered here and on other fora i guess that if you stick with Adam, Dynaudio or Klein&Hummel you probably won't be disappointed.

Tomos, I'd also recommend that you don't throw out your old monitors either... Get new ones for sure, but keep the other ones to A/B. We've got a set of Dynaudio BM6a's here in the studio room and a set of blue sky bookshelf monitors with the sub in the living room. I tend to use the dynaudios to determine how much hi end and mid I have, and then the blue sky's to check the bass.

When I'm down in San Diego, my friends have 4 sets of speakers that I make sure to check the mixes on all of them. Downstairs is a set of Dynaudio BM5s, as well as some jbl pa monitors (the same things you would use for dj monitors at a party) In the master bedroom there's the mackie 824s, and upstairs is a set of Event 20/20s. So definitely try to test them on as many sound systems as you can and make some notes on how things sound on each... then compare your notes and see what the common occurrences are in each set of speakers...           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Good plan. I will get to do an A/B for a while, but I already have a buyer lined up for my current speakers. I can't afford to upgrade without selling them - but I do have a lot of other good speakers (not monitors - but decent consumer speakers) in the house to test mixes on.

I'm quite excited, I really hope it won't take a long time to learn to adjust to the new sound of whatever new kit I end up with.

I like Mackie HR824's
They are very fat, the mid and high are very definded, and my mix get power with HR824's.

But you must have a isolated room, with acustical tretament, otherwise, the sound will be reflective, and some places of the room, the low will be more strong.
