don't get your hopes up too much. the drug they used is also believed to be effective against alzheimer's disease, but when administered in mice for just 15 days, it disrupted maturation of immune cells and fucked with the cellular structure of the intestine.
so even if this really works (after all the pictures they show of the regrown hair cells have a rather 'peculiar' structure), you have to expect a bare MINIMUM of 15-20 years to find a more specific downstream target and suitable drug that's actually safe for human consumption. don't hold your breath. |

I'd be 48-53 years old. Statistically that'd possibly mean I can enjoy good hearing in my twilight years. Unlike my classical loving father who is completely deaf in one ear now & finds tis depressingly frustrating.

Technological and medical Progress might be exponential rather than linear , considering what has happened in the last 20 years itself. Might be sooner than We think. |

the labwork is becoming a bit more efficient, but not by too much. the main thing here is computer simulations speeding up the process, but there's not much you can do to speed up the biological tests. mammalian cells or mice (or whatever model you're using) just take their time to grow and multiply.
still the main thing which is responsible for the huge time required are the safety regulations and clinical studies required for a drug to get approved. and there's no way this is getting shorter, the time needed has rather become longer because of tighter regulations. |
