Yes agree on that, you could go for slower CPU and more memory and it would be more helpful.
I'm upgrading 512Mb to 1Gb soon.

and one thing when making music with pc: Intel is much more stabile than amd, dunno why but intel is better for music making. there's some difference between the type of calculation procedures in those processors so i guess that's the reason.
though amd is not bad either, but i wouldn't count on it on live performance. Intel also runs cooler so it doesn't crash as easily as amd for that reason either.
and yes, you should definetly det more RAM to your pc. thats one great thing to make pc more stabile, because then computer can handle better multiple procedures like having numerous vst at the same time.
didn't meen to push ya down, just some facts. Hope you are satisfied with your computer and get some wicked tunes out of it |

it's not about the cpu, it's about the software
and yet I might add that AMD is very much for music making.

when your using only software the cpu is really something that counts. and I didn't say amd is hbad but its a mathemathical fact that intel is better on musical processes no matter what you say. If you don't belive me get some comparisation with amd and intel and you'll find out. It's truely about the software and that's why if your using new softwares and vsts you NEED to have fast cpu |

Woah, slow down there--
If you were talking about the AMD K6-2 I may agree with you on Intel being the better chip. in the real world when you remove the OS from the equation, Athlon and Intel are equally stable as long as you keep them both cool. they both run hotter than the negev these days so good cooling is a must and not doing so will lead to crashes, wierd glitches BEFORE your box tells you it is overheating.
I run AMD and Intel with both Windows and Linux on multiple machines. When I can compile my own software, Athlon beats the pants off Intel on straight CPU instruction crunching. the only thing Intel has going for it is a higher clock speed and more L2/L3(!!!!) cache on the Xeon MP. However Mike, do you have $4000 to spend on your CPUs? I would expect a whole box WITH reach-around for that kind of money.
I have come to accept the fact that I will never own the top of the line machine. I'm still in this old Palomino and as long as I keep him cool and dusted inside he runs fine. Plenty of tracks and plenty of plugins.
Intel's main advantage over AMD at this point in time is the 800Mhz FSB which is just nothing in comparison to the Nforce2. Think about getting at your memory and hard disk twice as much, twice as fast!
However you pay for that kind of power and on Intel you are looking at one P4 or two to 4 Xeon$$$$'s
My 2 cents. I'm saving for an Athlon MP.

mlazar got it perfectly..
and i have to say that for music software cpu is much more needed than above 256 ram..
as for the cooling of the amds there is no such matter nowadays with the latest cpus..
the 2.6 cpu with the manufacturer's cooler runs at 39 celsius and with a 15 euros coller you can make it run at 30... (the same p4 runs at 29 )
all this of course with the appropriate tower case..
u save a lot of money with amd...
in search for an answer... |
