I'm planning to upgrade mine to this:
AMD AthlonXP 2200+
some motherboard (which one should I get?)
256mb DDR 333
Hardisks will remain the current ATA100 I have now. Not replacing them
I also have a Delta 66 which I'm not going to replace.
Any ideas on this?

and better go for xp2500 or higher, otherwise u can t take full advantage of your 333-ram (--> fsb) !
asus-board with via kt 400 or nvidia nforce2 (...better nvidia afaik. i ve got it ( A7N8X) and it works fine, though not much experiences yet )
good luck !

Problem is that I'm a little limited on budget, so I'm not sure if I can even get the 2200...

Mike i work with AMD1800 and 512Mb Ram and it works great. I'd advice you to lower the CPU level to AMD2000 and buy more memory, memory is very crucial factor when processing real time effects and sample handling.
Motherboard? Go for Gigabyte. Works for me fine and i heard a lot of sound ppl recommending it.
And BTW your UT will run faster!

I run my UT on a P4 1400
I got 2 comps in my house.
The thing is, I don't want to wait and get more money. I'm going to army in about 6 months so I want to do as much as I can.
I work a lot with VST and VST effects. What's more important, CPU or Memory? Unfortunately I cannot afford both.

but look close at prices of mobo and get pc 2700 ram ( or pc 2100 if u go for xp2200 )...less expensive...if u find good "shop", u eventually can get both...hope for u.

Mike,
I have upgraded my PC to AMD Athlon 2000+ with Gigabyte GA-7VAXP motherboard. I got it with I giga ram but I believe u need at least 512megs of ram and your PC will fly.
Since I got it I NEVER passed the 50 - 60 % CPU usage, and I use a lot using heavy duty plugs and VSTi.
I don't think u need to wait, since this PC is very fast and newer machines are qwfully more expensive and therefore their value for money isn't as good as this cuz they are definitely not THAT faster...
Check out for the desktop tower that is designed specially for musicians - more fans for the spu ( do reduce overheating ), very comfi for extra hard disks, Firewire ports, Extra grounding IN the box to reduce electronic hum, and the box is better isolated since the AMD is a noisy little fella..
Go for the 2200 dude u wont regret it

I assume that a box like that will cost a fortune. Is it possible to take a normal box (I got a big one now I think ) and mod it?
I mean add those grounds and fans manually?
