Hey guys,

I just wanted to start a topic to try to get some feedback on my music and help figure out the best way to promote myself as a new artist..

I've been sending my tracks to many labels and people over the last 8 months; only to receive very little to almost zero feedback or response..

I had a great response and compliments from my Live set at AUM, but I can't figure out why no labels write back at all ..
So I'm guessing that I'm sending to the wrong labels and they just aren't interested, but I expected to hear some type of response; as in "it sucks", "needs more work", "not our style" ya know...

I had a thread going in the 'NEW TRACKS' section on here, had 33 views, and .. yep, zero responses haha ..

if anyone has some time to kill, I'd love to know what you think about my music and what respectable labels you think would like my style of production..

many thanks in advance ! ~ b o m ~

First off, I think the track you have linked to here is pretty good. I really appreciate that you have chosen to give it away in WAV format--there's a much better chance that DJs are going to download and play your music that way. When you are just starting out, exposure trumps direct income all the time. Give some consideration to seeing how well free music promotions can work for you before stepping straight into commercial releases. One thing I see happening all the time is new artists making deals with new labels that then provide little in the way of promotional support. Its like casting your creation off into the void and losing half a year in getting yourself out there.

If you're interested in having your music released commercially, there are a number of challenges which must be considered. Currently, there is a huge surplus of artists competing for limited opportunities. To stack the odds in your favour, get smart about your self-promotion. It could be as simple as taking a professional approach to your promo package--which should, ideally, include a printed CD-R with a cover image of some kind, a short bio, and a photograph, as well as all the pertinent contact details. Successful labels are likely to receive far more blank CDs than they know how to keep track of, so don't let your promo get lost. A professional looking promo kit says "I am serious about this."

Another thing to consider is networking. Do you know anyone running a label? They might be the first people to check in with. Many artists have their first release through people they know--as with finding a job, place to live, or just about anything else in this universe, networking will greatly improve your chances. In the online world, unless you are already known, you won't generally receive much of a response if you come out of nowhere (and that is what would someone surmise from seeing that you've only joined Isratrance about three weeks ago). Generally, you may find interest in your productions increase as you show interest in others--remember, you're not the only one in this position

These days, many artists are swallowing the bait from "too good to be true" operations like Geomagnetic (whom I see is linked on your web site). Basically, you should employ some common sense here. If a label is releasing tons of CDs every year with artists no one has heard of while Iboga is struggling to make ends meet, well... don't be surprised if things don't work out as agreed. With the glut of artists on the market, labels are increasingly taking advantage of the situation, offering little to no advance, or simply not paying any money whatsoever. Why not simply give it away, in that case? Here I would suggest comparing the value of having a track released on an obscure poorly distributed compilation that sells around 200 copies versus professionally packaging and presenting your music as a free promotional release online. Currently, releases promoted on my site alone can clock 1,000+ downloads a month to start, and that number is sure to grow. (Of course, I wear my bias on my sleeve here; I am very interested in empowering new artists and providing a viable alternative to the traditional distribution route.)

As for the track you have linked here, I think Auraquake is an obvious match (I totally hear a huge Penta influence), and I would also suggest looking into Dropout and Manic Dragon (an obvious fit with the name). If you're really having no luck, considering taking a serious approach to raising your profile by giving some tunes away for free.

Hey man dont get bothered I know your feeling except when i did it my music wasnt near as good as yours HAHA You just keep going results will come but it will take time my advice to you is to get on msn and just start sending your music to other artists it will find its way into the right hands eventually. I think a common mistake is when people know how much hard work went into thier "babies" and know how valuable to them so they only send them to labels. The best way to get exposure is to get some of your music to as many people as possible in as many ways as possible. Just sacrafice the secrecy of a couple tracks and start blindly introducing yourself to artists and dj's via msn or myspace and give them links to those songs. Worst case scenario is that you will meet some good connections around the world.

you have great music so just keep putting it out there.

best wishes

well, the track sounds great, but understand you're making underground trance music, so it's pretty much difficult for any artists making that kind of music to get released. only American trance artists who have been working at it for years have gotten real exposure- Penta, Bodhi 13:20, Chromatone, Ghreg on Earth, et. al. As others have mentioned, the best thing is to just give out your music for a while, especially to your favorite DJ's... especially your favorite DJ's that have oversea's gigs, etc. the best exposure in this scene is when some DJ plays yr track at sunrise or in the middle of the night or day and a bunch of people go crazy and say "what the f was that?!" and they find out and then they love your music forever because of that one beautiful moment on the dancefloor.

your gig at AUM was quite kick ass and proper, so i don't think you'll have a problem. best thing is to keep going to parties and meeting all the people you can and playing as many gigs as possible.

only thing i didn't like in the track was the build uppy ramping frequency lead hoover thing going into the freak-out. to my ears that's a bit overused/"cheesy" esp. in comparison to the rest of the track which is pretty heady.
