After listening to the samples, I don't really see this music connecting to ambient or chill out, although I know that Abakus name is historically connected. This doesn't make the music bad, just not something remotely connected

It's good enough in it's own right. Though some of the songs really remind me of the Global Underground of the late 90's. Based on the negative feedback I've read so far, I was prepared to be really disappointed. Maybe it's because of that, that (while a bit mainstream sounding for my tastes) I really thought it was pretty good for what it is. Follow-up albums are tough anyhow. If you sound too much like the first, you're a one trick pony. If you sound too different, you lose the interest of your primary fanbase. Damned if you do. Damned if you don't. |

I can give an opposite example - the easiest to think about is shpongle-- two completely diffrent albums, two diffrent vibes, and still 2 classics in a row (some people will say three, i wont). but i agree its a rare case.
as for the album, after the first listen, i still dont feel connected. the production and track build-ups are awesome, but im not connected to the poppy feel. i think you have to listen to this album outdoors during some activity to really enjoy it. definetly not an album for solitary home listening.

I just got the new album yesterday, already have listened to it 3 times
Maybe I am bias by being an Abakus fan, but I think the new album is stellar! My favorite track is #2 Sliding Sh. And the intro brings the whole piece together. It brings me back to the well known track on the first album, That Much Closer to the Sun, #3 Nightwalker. Although there are no samples, it has that same sunny, catchy beat that ends up playing over in your head.
The new album has the same exciting rhythm to it as the first, maybe even more upbeat and that is the classic Abakus sound we all ask and look for. And who can forget #6, Culture is not your friend? Although, sampling Terrance is not a new concept and over used, which might be my one complaint, regardless, Abakus did a fantastic job using the sample and weaving it in and out through the track. I really like how you can hear Mckenna echoing in the background, as if to guide you through a dream. I'm sure we all have been there at some point or another.
All in all, thank you for another piece of priceless work in chill history. It's what was needed.

From the first listen I really didn't get into this album. I didn't expect an album like "That much closer..." but I miss the vibe of tracks like "California Sunshine" which really touches my heart.
Maybe it will grow on me, but to be honest I don't think so after my first impression.

I would also like to add that I can see why people say that the overall vibe from "That Much Closer..." and tracks like "California Sunshine" (which I hold close to my heart as well) are missing from the new album. But I think track #5, Understated, really fills that gap. Imo, it is a close second to California Sunshine where I can't help but feel the sun warming my face, to cheerfully continue my day. Or that smooth feel of being out on the open road, traveling to your designated location.

I'm so glad that I got this album. I was considering not after hearing so many negative things about it but I guess most of the people slagging it off haven't heard it. It sounds like a great follow up to That Much Closer To The Sun. Similar feeling but very different at the same time. It's warm, it summer psychedelic it's great.
  Wait.....What? |

I got this email from Modus this morning. I have been holding out on buying this, unable to make up my mind.
Now it is ordered. Cool. Though I have missed summer with it, I'm sure it'll warm me during winter's cold sunny days...
Can't beat 4 quid incl. postage! |

I'm feeling ripped seeing this album now at 4 pounds with shipping. Replied onto their mail, but no answer yet...
I presume there have been made too many copies, and demand stayed low, crisis, etc etc...
Although I like this album, and I'm sure that it will be perfect for some summer tours.
Those who get this at 4 pounds are lucky bastards. |
