Try to find out what other people are asking for making commercials. And charge accordingly. Don't go too cheap. A usual rate is easily 50 to 80 euro 's per hour. But it depends on the type of media.

The last track that got selected from me for a commercial got me $ 750, it ranges from $200 into the 1000s, also keep in mind that if you want to succeed, the more commercial, stupid sounding and conservative, the better your chances to have them use your music... they don't pay by hour usually, they have a fixed budget and will pay you accordingly... sometimes they give you nothing but you can collect via your pro affiliation, and that can be quite substantial too, but takes forever until it goes into your account...
good luck...

@Upavas I believe there's a market for complete tracks and also for loops. We've talked about this (not exactly, but eheh) before. Since you have experience on this, could you explain to us how you think one should go about getting in this business? Cheers |

usually, when it comes to these kind of things they have a budget in mind. when i have worked on these kind of things the budget they had in mind was always over what i expected getting.
so my advice is that you ask them what they had in mind when they ask you for your price.
be careful with the publishing rights also, so you are sure that they don't want you to sign 100% of them. cause then all the royalties when the thing is aired goes into their pockets.
and hopefully you are also signed in with the copyright bureau in your country like GEMA or STIM or SACEM.
by the way depending on where you are you can sign up with another country.
in france for instance SACEM is a total scam, they ask you for money to subscribe, 1 000 000 papers to fill in and you must send in 2 CDs everytime you have a new release, blablabla... bascily it takes a hundred years.
with STIM in sweden you sign up online, they send you papers to sign and send back, even if you live abroad. once that is done you just up your new tracks in online on their website.
then they pay you every 6 month by (IBAN transfer if you live abroad)
Anyway its really important that you are signed up somewhere, because otherwise you gonna miss out on most of the money.
my 2 cent.....

In Kiev (Ukraine) 30 sec music for a video ad can bring you $200-400. if you are designing sfx you may have additional $30-100. Per hour work here is charged around $30 (in case you are recording VO or creating sfx on per hour basis). In most cases it really depends on the budget, you don't have much options if the client calls you and says 'hey i've got $300 and need music will you make it?' of course i will, otherwise someone else will do, even for less.
so, if anyone needs sound job done, please welcome, it is cheap here

It's like that pretty much everywhere Makus... I had one track out on the weather network USA for no sync fee and will be collecting $ for it via my pro affiliation. Considering it was on Stormwatch during the Hurricane Sandy forecast and the viewer ratings during that went up enormously I ought to be getting a fair bit of cash soon
