Hey!
I'm getting tired of all the pad sounds I have on my computer, and I'd like to learn how to make pads on my own. Not just the standard "long attack, long release".
Can someone redirect me to some tutorials etc?
I'm also very interested in making pads from samples etc. Please help me get beter at this.

use your imagination, grab sci fi movies and look for samples. Instead of using just one pad use lots of them.
They are so many choices... creativity has no rules           Soundclound:

You should really check out omnisphere and alchemy.

Use alot of LFO's to create motion in the sound, unison, FM, chorus, long reverb

omnisphere is great for just about anything hehe. honestly the long attack long release method is going to be your basis for you WHOLE pad of sounds... of course some might be slightly tweaked to fit a particular track etc... layer different "basic" pads to make something sound larger and more complex... its one way alot of people do it! so say (for shits and giggles) you took a synth- used a square wave for the osc... adjust the Envlopes with the above settings... play around with them to they blend and mesh together and sound good. then add fx and modulate what you want via automation and/or LFO's oh and turn up the voices to like 6,8, or maybe 12+ depending on the synth. Just experiment with those basics! Delay and reverbs can help SO much. More than so. Chorus can as well. anything really. But- to get even more advanced do the same method only with more osc's layered on each other in the synth (albino, zebra, absynth, omnisphere, etc... are all good) then just tweak the sound differently to what you like and such on the different osc's.
using samples for pads (not talking about one shots either!) take a singing acapella of a male or female voice... doesn't have to mach the track or anything. if you can get newtone and edison or similar from image line on your preferred daw you can just use chords (chords are a big part of pads, stings, and atmospheres as well!!) fl guru made a tutorial on what to do and it works AWESOME! and your putting a sample to good use.
take a look on how to do it

If you already own Omnisphere, just go hunting through soundsources and build your own patches from it.

Layering two different soundsources and adding subtle modulation through LFOs almost always nets me interesting texture/pad noises.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

An alternative to long release/attacks is volume automation (or recording). Take any drone or string type sound and make the volume rise in, out, up and down, or whatever you like. Personally I do it this way more often than messing with envelopes, I like the control, plus I can make a swell rise for as long as I want before reaching its peak.

Rising for 32 bars before peaking sounds pretty cool, IMO, just as an example. I got that idea listening to a Parus track, they threw in a constant drone rising in volume for 32 bars that sounded really great.

You say you own Omnisphere, so I would suggest loading a Pad Patch that you like and look at the Modulation Matrix to reverse engineer what exactly is happening to the patch and apply it to your own patches. Thats actually one of the coolest things about Omnisphere, the interface lets you see what is happening to the sound in the mod matrix, that makes it much easier to learn from it than from any other synth.

under modulations in omnisphere you can chose wheel as a source, and they use it really often in they're pre-made patches. what does the "wheel" do? anyone?
