You know that famous Astrix "squeeky synth".
My favorite example is in the first major synth of Electric Universe's "The Prayer".

Well, how do you make this sound and which VST is often used? What waveform works best?(I KNOW I should be original and not copy but I'm curious as to how its done). So far, I've gotten a similar sound by modulating the OSC at a fast rate so it kinda jumps and sounds "squeeky". Its not quite there yet though. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

what i usally do is set the wave form to a sawtooth ,kranck the fm amount till the end and turnd down the semitone to the negative value.try getting a sound that sound like an arcade game u have those a lot in the junglist if im not mistaken.n u r right with the osc that modulates the lfo trying two even.
hope that helped

yea thats all from FM in the lower registers or from a huge difference in the mod/carrier. Your best bet software wise is to probly use DiscoDSP. As mentioned, use a saw, crank up the FM amount and play lower on the keyboard if your not getting that sound up high. Just moveing the FM knob around while doing this will give you a whole range of different popular psy noises.

The sample is Electric Universe - The Prayer.

"or from a huge difference in the mod/carrier." <- can you please expand on what you meant by this. Are you using a Vocoder?

Also which VST do you think would be best in this FM department? right now I have Albino, FM7 and Absynth 2.
Thanks again for your time.

Best FM synth of course FM7, like the name says. But the other 2 are also sweet synthz.            Signature

fm ? don't see too much fm in there

my last track has a very similiar lead in it, that i made with the albino 2. simple slow lfo on the pitch of a detuned saw did it for me. could also use a pitch env.

oh - and remember to pump the res a little bit and play with the cutoff.

yea actually after listening to it again it might just be an lfo on the pitch. When he turns it off a few bars in with what i was thinking of would have left a much higher pitch.
you can get a simliar sound with FM though if you set the carrier to two octaves higher than the note your playing and the modulator to 2 octaves lower:

you should defianetly check out discodsp if you want to comp astrix sounds as its a clone of the nord lead. Far easier to use than FM7 also.
