Hi friends ~
I am having difficulty sculpting my crashes...
I have a decent library to pool from - Battery 2, Kontakt 2, Kompakt, Reason, and a few sample CD's.
I am looking for a nice long tail with a clean, non-harsh splashy sound (no detectable cymbal metal etc.)
What should my filters look like? Most of the crashes I have on file do not seem to have that long, natural decay suitable for editing, or have too much original "rock" texture, or some other characteristics that make it to difficult to customize.
I need crashes both for my wandering downtempo tracks and for more full-on sounds as well.
I am asking where to look for better files or what can be done to properly edit the files I have.

A bit of EQ, a nice long, clean plate... does it for me every time.

Are we talking the Para EQ and RV 7000? I'm not sure where to boost. Maybe I should attack this part in Kontakt.
Thanks for the suggestions mates.

a transient designer and a high pass filter, first the high pass filter, then the transient designer (ex.: dominion from digitalfishphones)
a transient designer enables u to sculpt the kick/tail, u can enhance the volume of the tail and the volume of the kick by setting the level and the amount of milliseconds...
check it out, works like a charm.
The reverb trick is very handy too, but u'll get a different kind of effect that way. |

Still not getting it One problem is the tail of the crash drops off abruptly - trying to correct for that using reverb but not having success. My rack has a 6:2 mixer, RV 7000, Redrum, and M-Class EQ in that order. I have a low cut and a boost around 5db. Still can't get that nice long decay.
Suggestions? Thx. |

compress it. set extremely low threshold, soft ratio (2-3:1) or experiment with that, fast attack and slow release, so that you get gain reduction of, let's say, 20 dB. it is pretty radical, but might be exactly what you want. if you want a soft crash, set eq cut at about 8 kHz, 5-6 dB, with Q setting of about third of an octave, or a bit more (so that eq does not change the sound at 5.5-6 khz).

what vox explained is exactly what a transient designer does, but he does it with a compressor... however, with a compressor u can't change the power of the transient itself (the kick or punch of the crash) |

Sure you do: The attack time defines the length of the transient that you want to increase. The amount of compression + make-up gain determines the amount of transient boost. If you set it up so that the make-up gain is equal to the amount of compression, the body of the sound stays roughly at the same level and the transients are increased by the amount of make-up gain.

really?
what is a 'transient designer' anyway?
anyway, you can do another thing - set a compressor set like i already described in the send channel, and send the crash to it. that way you will get a mix of both the original and the compressed one, so you'll get the best of both ways - the attack of the original, and the tail of the compressed one. it's worth experimenting.

Hi there!
How can I make this nice, long tailed crash (right at the beginning):
http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/1/4/1678823/crash.ogg
And also could somebody share that Reason crash sample what Colin mentioned? I just can't make a decent crash and my ears keep ringing after browsing through n thousand samples ...THX in advance |
