hi guys, i recently did my first test run for a live psytrance set. it went off really well, but i want it to be tighter and funkier...
so, here is the background. i make everything in FruityLoops (FLStudio)... i want to play this live, but it has a shit live setup. so to play live i run two sessions of FL and run one session into my front L+R and the other to my rear L+R and then use a dj mixer to mix between the two tracks.
this is rather cumbersome and doesn;t leave me much space to play any "Live" samples using my MIDI keys and sampler (which is also FL).
so.... can i get any tips? do you think it is cheating pre-recording my set and tweaking it so that it plays best for live and then during the gig actually play "live" over the top using fruity as a sampler with my keys?
btw,,, FL is the bomb when it comes to a sampler when using a MIDI keyboard... you can do anything with the right instruments / samples and effects.

what to record it for?
mix with cds
then u have the laptop free to play.
and u can choose the tracks order too. hooray.
i mix on the laptop and play real synths so its easier (usualy use cds but for the sake of 24bit its better with laptop)
but kinda prefer out of choise to do it with playing on top of recorded edited stuff then looping etc. (its nice that 'live mode' in FL its true but dunno..) also very nice but not my thing.. watch some of cosm's tutorials maybe ableton will fit you better www.sattelbattle.com

hmmm... that has given me an idea, i can mix my tracks using Mixmeister so it is semi-mixed live and then play "live" with my midi & fruity. i don;t use a "real" synth as fruity + VST's are all i need.
cheers Elad... i must say Sattel Battle was a great album |

GOOD advice. i might remix my tracks and play them live like before... dj like. ie. one FL session going to Front L/R and the other going to Rear L/R. ie. if i am booked to play Live, i better actually play live.
man, i am totally not a fan of ableton. if i was a full time musician i could maybe take the time to split all my channels and rend them and then pull them into Ableton, but i have 9 tracks at the moment each with about 20-30 channels... after all, it's psytrance.
btw; this might be blasphemy, but i really don;t like ableton. FL has more flexability even to the point you can assign each separate channel to a different speaker if you have an ASIO 5.1 or 7.1 surround card... DTS style. now THAT is psytrance!!! |

You really need Ableton Live. Just learn how to rewire it with Fruity.

You can do it in so many ways! just come up with what works best for you!
i dont have soundcard right now so i have 3.5mm adapter to 6.5mm females running 2 6.5mm cables to my yamaha Aw1600 and record live, either by setting up a session in FL studio or Cubase... i really like FL cause you can tweak so many things.... also with this setup i can connect microphones and guitars and bass or anything i want....
so anything that works for you

maybe in the future...
actually the major part of sound systems at parties and clubs are just stereo...and if you have luck, becouse today is common see mono systems on the road...make me sad when I come to play and see the mono system...no stereo, no sound spacing...
btw, ableton can split channels into different outputs...

ok so my first post.. and please don't take my words so harsh, I'm trying to constructively critisize!
BUT THIS IS REDICULOUS that it is 2009 and Ableton LIVE (did you see LIVE is in the name!!) ver. 8 is out.. and people in the IDM/Psytrance community STILL DONT FUCKING GET IT!!!!
Ableton can DO ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANYTHING!!!
like the guy said.. it can even rewire to fruity loops.. which I would never ever ever understand why you would want to.... I mean you can even buy FL studios wave editor as a stand alone VST and use it inside ableton.. as that is the ONLY thing ableton is missing and really is kind of unecessary if you just learn to work other ways...
are you not following the great advice and going to tomcosm.com??? are you NEVER EVER searching youtube.com for innovative IDM ideas.. cause guess what.. if its its not a video about some new plug or peice of hardware its about ABLETON!!!! yeah sure everyone is stuck in older daw's for track creation, I get it, its what you know.. but if your trying to LEARN how to setup a live set... then why not LEARN ableton LIVE?????
jesus...
now, sorry for being rude.. just please please take our advice.. download the free 14 day trial and then pm or someone else for a "live set template" then tweak it to your needs in those 14 days.. SAVE THE THING.. and voila you can use it for the rest of your stinking life........ and guess what will happen.. you will get bored with what you've saved and see all the amazing possibilities and you will break down and BUY IT!!!!! ITS THAT GOOD!! It is to me the most inspirational peice of gear I have seen in my life...........
Just do it!

i love all the great advice i am getting from people here and i respect the people that are in love with Ableton, but i really go wild for Fruity since V9 came out.
I can understand why people don;t understand why i could never go back to using Ableton again (yes, i used it for about 3 months but found FL to be more suited to my needs). Why? because if you get Producer edition of FL the amazing things you can do with Audio clips just blows me away. Plus, with 13 years experience with the little beast, i don;t think i can produce anything near what i can in Ableton.
But lets not turn this into a FL vs Ableton. I think i got the right cues about how i should play live from Mandari,
"seriously, i dont think any promoter is amused by this shit bookin u live and u play dj.... "
plus, if everyone played Ableton live, then we would all sound the same. Some of the best DnB in the last couple of years that i have seen live was two guys with two trackers and an old roland synth. |

..bet those guys would have sounded alot better had they ran those peices of hardware through ableton.. with an apc40 and two foot pedal setups... quality plugins.. but whatever...
how well could you use fl at 3 months?? |

+1 for Ableton Live |

ok, so i admit i was wrong. i am now spending all my spare time working 20hours a day getting all my tracks set up in ableton live for my gig in 2 weeks time.
thankyou to those who persisted and the advice about visiting Tom Cosm website... there was this one tutorial that convinced me to go for it. painful and slow that it is... i think it will be worth it.
cheers!!!
