I've been producing for a year, never touched a music instrument. but im starting to get the sounds, but not quite their yet. one week i feel very inspired and I get loads of good results, for the next 3 weeks i just cant get anything down.

How can i improve if none of my mates are interested in music production? should I take a course? or should I read more? should i just sit down and play around with instuments, effects etc... and figure out why is that doing that?

I feel i need some help, someone who can teach me some stuff. do you guys feel the same? were u ever in this position? if yes what did you do?

Its been a long process, but im not even close to achieving what some of you have, I know it is hard but its becoming so hard latetly that im thinking of giving it all up.

Im thinking of taking some drum lessons would that help? I think it would, i would be able to get a better knowledge of groove etc...

I need some advice guys, as u can see im totally lost, I know some stuff but not all of it, i just want know what you guys have done up till today (being music courses, reading etc...) and if it has benefited you and how. Where are you getting your knowledge from?

Well it really seems that you are in a very difficult phase as GTN mentioned. But he is lucky that he never been through something like this.

I think that the majority of the people involved with music production have been through similar situations.

So just to give you some motivation and "guidance"(maybe?) i'll tell you in brief my story.

I started producing 15 years before using a the good old atari and just a Korg O1 keyboard.
My set up was completely limited, none of my friends were into music making and most important was that i didn't know or couldn't find at all anyone that was into it just to ask some very simple questions. So i had to spend hours, weeks even months trying to find out myself how to do things(even the simpler ones). But i never gave it up.

Today is so much easier for anyone to get started. You have all the software and hardware to give you inspiration and you have the greatest input resources through forums like that, for any question you may have.

Afterall you are into it only for one year and that time is very short for anyone to have descent results unless he's a super talent.

Being inspirational for one week and nothing for the rest three is also common. It happens to everyone. Noone can be inspirational every day. You are full of inspiration and it goes out of you like music. When it's finished you need time and input for your inspiration to be refilled. Then it'll go out again. It's a circle.

Not knowing how to play any instrument can be a disadvantage, smaller or bigger, depends. For sure it's the best to have some basic at least music knowledge in theory and instrument playing.

My suggestion to you would be to start taking some instrument lessons, but not drum lessons. Drums is not music, is rhythym. If you want to be creative you should take lessons on the piano or guitar or anything else you like. For me piano is a better choice since you always use a keyboard to produce.

Taking music lessons will occupy you more and in another way than music production only. This way the frustration will be minimized, and at the same time you'll start feeling more confident about yourself. And soon all this will be shown in your music production. Maybe you'll need enough time until you reach a subjective level of quality but in the meantime you'll be satisfied by your progress enough to keep you into it.

Remember, frustration is the best(or worse?) friend of any music producer, no matter the reason. It is and always will be there, waiting in the corner.

Quiting is always the easy solution.

If you really want to dive deep into music making, then you won't quit. But if it's not a pure passion, a primal urge, then there's no need to bother so much.

Sorry for my novell here but i hope i helped in some way.

to djparanormal :

Taking some audio & midi courses will without any doubt, help you save time regarding technical issues, at least. For me it's a good way to make a fresh start when you're stuck and frustrated and the only choice seems to be giving the whole thing up.

But you must always have in your mind that inspiration is the basic factor that will determine and reveal everything you are going to learn in the courses you're going to take.

I had the same problem when I started 8-9 years ago... I guess the only difference is, I didn't realize how crappy my music was. And, I must say, it was reaaaally crappy. I didn't know how psytrance was supposed to sound. I think it could be rather devastating to have a good feel for the music when starting out, because, darn it - it's not easy! It helps bigtime that softsynths are available these days - but you still have to learn to use them.

In a nutshell just keep working. And remember to enjoy the little victories, when you learn something new - there's nothing better than the "oooooh-so-that's-how-they-did-it" experiences!

..stick with it... just try and keep an eye on the big picture..... like.... if 3 years ago u never made nothing, and 1 year ago you finished your first track (regardless of how good)... then that is progress!!! the learning curve is not a smooth gradual, diagonal line... its a stepped, jagged unforgiving motherfucker and progress comes in spurts and stages...It always feels like you are never getting anywhere, but when you comapare to 1 month, 6 months, 1 year before... there is always improvement ! .....Try and balance 'Free Spontaneous Creativity' with 'Structured, Ordered Forms of Learning'........sit down, get mashed and write music one day..... stay straight, go to Midi class....read some magazines/books/ web articles the next day .... It will all mix up inside to help you get your ideas out how you want them to be ......finally dont stress..., Just....
