When I studied Electronics, my teacher always said that Xlr is best for high voltage inputs (ex: connecting PA's)
If using small voltage inputs RCA is the best, as the loss's are almost zero. |

Oh, and Analog talked about SPDIF.. It's a good option, but you'd need a digital/analog converter.
I remember some Roland monitors that besides the amp, they also included a D/A converter inside. |

I found my RCA inputs on my monitors were noticeably dirtier than the 1/4" that I'm using now.
I'm not sure what you mean by phone (maybe 1/4"?), but in my experience I found a slight improvement in sound quality by going to the better inputs. The RCAs would occasionally crackle, though this could have been due to my converter plugs (1/4 to rca).
If the RCA sounds good then it sounds good. But if you get crackling you might want to try one of the other inputs.

Hi,
It is best to use the XLR as they are balanced meaning you will suffer far less noise due to interference. (Providing your mixer/soundcard has balanced outputs). They are also more sturdy.. they are by far the best. Also... isn't phono the same as RCA? If you mean 1/4" jacks then they are probably unbalanced but I think you do sometimes get balanced 3-pole versions. |

XLR should be the best choice for less noise, but with 1 meter distance hardly any noise will catch up.
I would use XLR just cause they are firm and never lose.

But guys,
He's sending a small voltage Output wich will only later be amplified inside the speakers.
Is XLR really the best solution for non amplified streams ? |

Yep. Good XLR cables (with high CMRR values) plugged into properly balanced sockets will cancel out most interference. As you say, the signal only gets amplified in the monitors (if they are powered) so you want to have as little interference as possible.
As for the cable only being 1 meter, alot can happen in 1 meter! Especialy if the cable goes passed the back of a CRT video screen or something like that.
But of course, your sound card/console outputs need to be either XLR or TRS balanced jacks with a "converter" cable. (TRS on one end, XLR on the other)
