hardcore sequencers: cubase (most used program on the market), logic (great alternative to cubase on mac), nuendo (cubase advanced ), sonar (cheaper alternative to cubase and logic), protools (industry standard, dedicated hardware needed), rosegarden (freeware but only on linux, ofcourse).

easygoing sequencers: ableton (especially for live use), fruityloops (fast and easy for the simple chores, hard for more advanced chores like mixing and mastering)

complete package: reason (a nice studio-setup wrapped in an easy to use package)

u'll have to buy a good soundcard too, one with very good AD/DA converters.

as to audio editors, the industry standards are wavelab and soundforge, but audacity and goldwave are very good too... U also have cooledit. Wavelab has the nicest interface, cooledit is the simplest soft, soundforge is extremely meticulous.

u'll also need a lot of plugins: a compressor (example: blockfish from digitalfishphones), a multiband compressor (example: psp vintagewarmer), an EQ (example: kjaerhus audio classic EQ), a limiter (example: kjaerhus audio classic limiter), a reverb (example: christian knufinke's SIR, or ambience from http://www.smartelectronix.com ), a multitap delay (example: ohmforce ohmboys), a normal delay (every sequencer has one), a few basic subtractive synths to start with (example: reFX claw, ishiiro toda's synth1. more complex synths are for later, and anyway, i would advise u not to use too many synths at once, get used to the ones u got first before u add another one), a drummachine (example: drumsynth from image line) and a buttload of samples

i would like to add a couple of apps to FREGLE's list:
- orion (a software studio somewhat similar to reason)
- project5 from cakewalk (a complete software studio, similar to fruity i guess)
