find out the basics

setting vst to midi channels, and how to set up samplers for drums and that kind of stuff

and then experiment, experiment, and experiment a bit more hehe

also, go though the posts in this forum, a lot of them will surelly help u a lot, but I think the first thing to do is try the program for yourlself to get an idea, after that you'll be more able to specify some particular points you didn't understand...

Good Luck!

i cant understand quite why nobody has written a decent cubase tutorial before, there's a massive need for it.

every week brings at least 3 posts like yours "i just got cubase how do i use it" , and i'm sorry, but there isnt really any way we can answer that. its way too vague, like fluo says a forum is only really suited to answering specific problems.

the only way would be to write a whole tutorial! which is a silly thing to type into a forum.

i'll do the best i can without being too verbose. bear in mind i use nuendo not cubase , they are very similar progs, but not identical , so a few things i say may be wrong.

audio (your samples and loops) ->

- you need first add an audio track, i do this under the project menu -> add track -> audio
- then add the audio file to it. i do this under the file menu -> import -> audio file

i advise learning the key commands or setting up your own (file -> key commands) as this is the fastest way to work. for example i add a new audio track with "ctrl+" , and add a new sample with "a".

also i have other commands set up to manipulate that audio once i have added it- like alt-R for repeat (kinda like looping it), ctrl-R for reverse, alt-N for normalise, etc.

MIDI / VSTis ->

what fluo is talking about is vstis. (vst instruments - these are software synths / samplers / etc). try to get hold of some of these, they are invaluable within cubase as it doesnt have a wide stock of internal synths/samplers (unlike, say, reason). for recommendations on which vsts to get, search this forum , there are dozens of threads.

VSTis are controlled by MIDI channels, so add a midi channel (project->add track->midi). then on the left ofthe arrange window , where you see each midi trak, you will see a drop down box to choose where that MIDI track is routed to. once you have added your VSTs they will appear in this list .

that'll do for now           http://www.dartrecordings.co.uk/

its not bout the manual...the manual is very decent and explained easily imho...but it's for people with basics not for people that want to start from scratch without the necessary vocabulary.           Anakoluth A Pebble in Your Eardrum's Shoe since 2001!

I see no nonsence in what I said...and maybe you'll give me reason in about 2-3 years if you keep on learning music production...

What I was saying was for you to try for yourself and then u can do some more specific answers, you can't just expect to learn everything about psy making in a simple question u do in a post, because a proper answer would just have to take loads and loads of pages hehe.

Anyway, I was just trying to help

most of the ppl on this forum learned cubase by thier own or with friend. you can master it but its really complex program and it takes time, my friend. may be you should work with more friendlier program like Reason. Like that you can get out what`s on your mind and you can practice cubase by editind your reason loops!           check out! www.soundclick.com/spasm
