Hi all,
I think I'm going nuts here. I need a drum machine that pretty much can do everything you could ever need from a drum machine (most of all, really good bassdrums). I've searched the web for some drum machines and come up with the following: *Jomox Xbase 09 *Tuched By Sound DRM-1 (or the cheaper DRM-2 mini) *Korg Electribe R (ER-1)
The top two are kind of expensive, but I guess it would be worth the money if they were really good.
I'm sure there are many more great machines out there, and I would _really_ appreciate if all you music makers could give me some tips or share some of your experience.

Be carefull about those machines man...I used to believe they could create killer sound but most of them are close to TR 808, TR 909 who can of course create cool rythmic samples but much less than a good sampler and good CDs.
If you can't afford a sampler buy something like Gigastudio which is as good as a sampler.
Maybe you need TR x0x sounds but take a time to try Gigastudio or any else soft sampler before choosing a maaachine. |

You can download Stomper from http://www.lysator.liu.se/~zap/stomper.html. You make your own drum (and anything else) sounds, then put them to a sampler (such as the ER-1) or something like that. Something about the Korg, it uses 32khz samples, which can be at a little reduced sound quality. |

Max, you're right, I don't want a simple TR-x0x clone. I want something that can do much more.
A sampler means finding good samples, I I hate doing that :) Well maybe it is a good idea anyways. I will consider it.
Michael, I've tried Stomper. It's a really good program but I don't think I can do good bass drums. They always sound kind of synthetic. I can't' really describe it...
Brain, Is the Rave-O-Lution really that good? :) |

--- in my opinion using samples for bass drum is very very bad idea... it will be used repetitively in the song and samples will play _exactly_ the same thing over and over.. this leads to what is called listener "fatigue"... also digital bassdrums are usually more tinny and less warm and phat than analogue. I use a fully analogue synth to make BDs... but i highly recommend going with something like the JoMoX or the ever wonderful 909 or 808 although there are sometimes midi timing problems with _some_ old 909s... digital synths sometimes are o.k. but never as good as analogue for something so foundational and vital.

So what do you suggest I use in bassdrums? Make a few bass drums that sound a little bit different and change the bassdrum sample during the track? Should I do so with the other drum sounds? ??? |

I use samples for bassdrumz, and I agree they do get pretty boring if you just leave them, messing slightly with the pitch at different points of the tracks (also the reverb and sine effects), playing the sample at different notes and having about 2 or three different samples usually breaks up the tedium tho. |
