Hi all
I would like to ask if anybody could help me to finish setup of my little music studio. What I have is Korg Triton and Virus Rack, both connected through Steinberg USB2MIDI to the computer. I've choosed a Cubase sequencer and something is working already. But I still problems mostly with Virus, it seems that Triton is working quite proper.
So, if anybody has a little time to help me, I will be very appreciated ...
Thanks in advance, djaSteel |

Hi PsyTom
well, it seems that Steinberg doesn't have a support for the newest hardware. At least it was impossible to find a proper Virus driver for Studio Module. But you're right, the OS is needed to be updated and I will do it, but don't know how yet :)
Moreover I think the root of the problem is more complicated. Cubase looks like a professional software, but because of the absence of support and the complexity of doing some things I've started to search for another sequencer. At the moment the candidates are Logic and Reason.
And of couse it's my first expirience in working with this kind of hardware and with MIDI at all and I'm pretty sure that I do something wrong. It's all come with time. Now I'm asking for a startup help to hear the sounds from my devices which were so expencive and I walked through 3 years to by them.
Thanks for advice, djaSteel |

Well,
1. IMHO, cubase is the most intuitive and friendly sequencer (although Logic is more professional and has more features).
2. Reson is not exactly a sequencer. It's a software that emulates hardware devices, and it won't assist you with your Virus.
3. For defining your virus in cubase: http://www.access-music.de/do_download.php4?file=misc/OS4_Cubase_instrument.zip&product=viruskb Just fill the forms and download. |

Well PsyTom
probably you're right in the first 2 points. What software do you use? (if so of course)
BTW are you sure that the driver for Virus B is compatible for Rack? It's not evident. Have you tested it? |

DjaSteel,
1. I use Cubase because Logic has some problems with my computer.
2. Virus rack Instrument definition for cakewalk: http://www.access-music.de/do_download.php4?file=misc/cakewalkrackosr1.zip&product=virusrack
There's no Cubase studio module definition for the Virus rack in access's website. Try out the Virus kb/b studio module definition. The possible worst scenario: It won't work, cubase would freak out, restart Cubase and windows.
3. The Virus kb/b driver for Cubase works fine for me (i own a kb version, though). |

Well PsyTom
1. The driver to which you pointed up is working properly. But it has no an editor for samples (an error dialog appears after dbl-click on sample) ... is it normal?
2. As I learned from the docs for virus it has three modes in which it has operate. Single, Multi and Multi-Single. How it responds to the driver? What should I choose, single(m) of multi(p)? I mean I want virus to play 16 different sounds simultaneously. What should I do?
3. How to syncronize an internal virus clock to a cubase' midi clock? Is it related to bpm tempo or not? I need to set up virus arpeggiators to an exact bpm rate as I've set in cubase.
4. Is it possible to collect all the virus drums in a one midi track and edit it in a drum mode? Otherwise I must create separate midi tracks for kicks, hihats etc. ...
5. If you have some time and ready to give some answers it would be nice to communicate by email, not to the forum
Thanks in advice djaSteel |

Wow...
Well, first of all, i've decided to post it in the forum since i know there are several Virus users among us and all this info just might help them with their own problems.
So, let's start from the beginning, shall we?
1.Editor for samples? what do you mean?
2.You should use the multi-single mode, because in this mode the Virus can play 16 sounds simultaneously, while you are able to control and change each one of the sounds (read pages 57-58 in the PDF manual for exact directions regarding this issue).
3.If you want to sync the Virus global clock (which controls the arpeggios, LFO and delay)with cubase you only need to plug your midi cable to the Virus' midi in (and of course to your sound card midi out :-)), select the proper midi outs in cubase, set the BPM rate in cubase as you wish, and the next time you hit the play button, the Virus global clock will automatically be synchronized to cubase's midi clock (works for me:-).
4.You can collect all the virus' drum patches to a single midi channel. You can do that by creating a drum map in cubase and assigning it to one midi channel. If you have cubase's manual search it for directions in order to do so.
Hope i helped, Tom. |

ok, no problem with posting to the forum ... and ...
1. I mean Macro editor which allows to change general parameters of a sample. Current driver I use doesn't have one.
2. I've read the docs. But I mentioned what mode of driver should I select in Cubase. The story is: I set multi-single mode for virus hardware manually, then I select _multi_ mode for driver in cubase ... and nothing is working - virus plays only 1 track, one sample instead of several different. The driver has several modes (I could see them when applying Setup Patches in Studio Module): - Single - Multi - MultiEditBuffer - SingleBuf - MultiBuf What item should I select in cubase track?
3. I must describe what exactly I have. Korg Triton and Virus rack are connected through USB2MIDI interface to computer. Korg has in-out A and the virus in-out B. The system is working, at least for Korg. The OS I use is Win98. But the problem that virus doesn't respond to changes in cubase. I have to set the bpm manually ... what could you suggest?
4. Unfortunately I have manual only in german ... so I can't use it ...
... this is it ...
Thanks in advance djaSteel |

It seems that nobody except PsyTom could answer my questions ... it's strange because I believe that many of you use Virus for music writing and forum itself rather kind that cruel ...

Some more answers for you, my dear:
1.The current driver doesn't include a patch editor (it's called patch, not sample). Hopefully, access will release a patch editor for cubase in the future (A patch editor for Logic audio already exist, though. The app is called Sounddiver and it allows to edit and store patchs of various synths. It's restricted to Logic audio only [10x Bilbo :-)]). 2.I use MultiEditBuffer mode, and it works fine. 3.I have no idea how to help you regarding the BPM matter. It should sync automatically when you send a midi message. Maybe you should E-mail access or contact the place you bought the Virus from.
Wish i could further helped you, Tom. |

please don't see it as a cruel thingie, djaSteel. the fact people have Virus, does not surprisingly make them professionals... it's not a big deal for a kid to work during the summer and buy a virus, it's "in" now. and now about your problems with the synth.i can't help you, because i don't own a Virus(*), but there's a thing called mailing list. and access have virus related mailing list. [you can find it via their site], nobody hasn't mentioned this term, but it's worth posting there your problem or maybe only finding the ready solution, because some people there actually work on the drivers, maybe somebody has met your problem: maybe it's the driver, maybe it's OS related issue maybe cubase isn't compatible with the rack.
there also may be a problem of the hub: have u tried to use only rack without the triton ?
actually,well, i envy your problems :))))
BOM, Bilbo
(*) i only can guess all this, but i can assure u when i get my hands on a Virus B [which i will] i will already know all the tricks & tips . |

Hi BaGGinz
... your story made me a little bit stupid :) But no problem man. I'm already a member of an access' mailing list (since I've bought virus) and some other forums :) I took care of myself in this way first because it's normal for every software developer like am I :) But my minus is that I never worked with MIDI before ... and virus and korg are my first synths.
Then ... I'f tested carefully my usb-midi interface and virus with korg and without, the same for korg. Everything works, BUT the problem (I suppose) that I use the driver in a wrong way. I've downloaded one using the link posted by PsyTom (look earlier posts). And it doesn't work at the moment ...
To PsyTom: I can't receive any bank infos from virus in MultiEditMode ... What is the problem ??? Probably I should do something manually ... could you give me detailed information how did you setup this? And what instrument do you choose for track from the popup menu? Multi, single or what? Please give me a detailed instruction how could I process that ...
Thanks you both guys, djaSteel |
