i have been trying out in depth several vst's to make basslines (or other things)
I found out that none of them are very accurate : when doing very tight filter envellope settings, i start hearing random discrete cliks.
I tried with the V-station and also with reaktor. So does this come from my hardware : i have a Core2duo E6400 with 2gb ram and a M-audio firewire 410 ? Or is it the settings in nuendo ? Or is it simply because you can't get sample accurate vst's ?
To solve this, i bounce several bars to audio, find one that sounds right and then duplicate it. (but i'd like to get it right with vst's because everytime i change the notes i have to bounce again etc...) |

and i'd like to add another question : are there any vst's out there that you don't have to bounce to get something real tight ?
I forgot to say i was working on a 24 bit 48 khZ project and the size of the buffer is 256 samples. So this 'inacuracy" problem appears when i play vst's live in nuendo and also when i bounce them....

you need a vst which resets the phase of the oscilator each and every time it receives a midi note.
Try,
U-he Zebra
Cronox
Albino
Those are the only ones I use to create a bass out of the synth - otherwise you are looking at sampling the output from the VST and using the same bass note repeated so that exactly the same start behaviour is present each time.
I've had mixed results in Reaktor by tying a midigate in into a sync on an oscilator (this does work in SE (using a monostable unit) and SM)- note you'll also need to deal with the maths in reaktor to make sure it retriggers on a rising value from the gate trigger as the sync on the oscillators is retarded and also resets on note off.

thanks for your reply
the reason i made my own simple synth for basslines in reaktor is because i didn't understand why those synths were not precise. Yet with reaktor it's still strangely clicking (i can hear it well because i only use one saw wave osc). I hadn't thought of tying the osc sync to a midi gate in my instrument ... will try it tomorrow.
I suppose if i don't succeed i'll have to sample notes ... or switch to the albino.
Do you have a software sampler to suggest ?
I wonder why people never wrote about this in the bassline section; it's crucial. It means that you just can't get good results with the v-station used as a simple vst: you have to bounce and check carefully your signal. For real : no two bars look/sound alike with that synth; I tried with the discovery and it was also a failure...
Does anyone know if the VB-1, the Tau and the other popular synths for bass resets the phase of the oscillator ?
Anyways thanks and people remember :
to make vst basslines you need a vst that resets the phase of the oscillator each time it receives a midi note !!!!!!! I'll remember this sentence because i've been tweaking for weeks and trying out a lot of synth !
